Recommendation for closed back and over ear headphones for $200 that work well amped and unamped?

The original E17 headphone amp was considered comparable to the original E11. If you find you can't use the DAC in the E17 with your phone, I'd probably go for the E11K to have a new one with a new battery rather than the E17 with a battery that is a couple of years old, given how lithium batteries do degrade a bit over time.

This.

I have an E17, and I will tell you that it is fantastic. I really like it and it works brilliantly with my old 3GS (have not and likely will not try it with my new phone though).

But...it has a problem with battery life.

I really need to replace the battery (there's a post here somewhere detailing how to do it). It's at the point now where I can't fly from Phoenix to STL without the battery dying.

Mostly it stays plugged into my E09K at my desk to provide computer audio. I will likely get something else (probably an E18 or similar, since I have an Android phone now) for the next time I need to travel.

I would imagine that "refurbished" means the battery has been replaced, but I'm not sure of that.

Just from using mobile phones and laptops, I'd imagine we'll all see problems with lithium batteries within our mobile audio equipment within a few years. Kind of sucks we buy good equipment and then the batteries are not usually user replaceable.

I think I remember you have a Nexus 6, liquidzoo? I ended up deciding I like it well enough with my E12 that I just don't want to bother with a DAC. The distortion output measurements on it seem to be pretty darn good (scroll down): http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_nexus_6-review-1164p7.php

Yes, just got it recently. The E12 is on my short list of candidates for a new portable amp. Currently using my old E6, and while I like it, I know that my headphones would benefit from more power than it can provide.

Nice thing about the E12 is that it can even do a good job with headphones that are somewhat difficult to drive. So good for new headphone acquisitions

Well the cans arrived. I am so disappointed. The sound is so low for 32ohm headphones coming out of my iPhone 6. I mean it's pitiful. Bass is weak. These should not need an amp.

Are they damaged? I have tested so many other headphones up to 38ohm that rock compared to these.

You can't just look at impedance to see how easy headphones are to drive. You also have to look at sensitivity. So the K545 are 97dB/mW, which is probably lower than what you are used to with other 30 ohm range cans, and certainly a good bit lower than most IEMs in that impedance range.

So there is likely nothing wrong with the K545 as long as they sound good (get loud enough) with the E11K.

Thanks for the comment. I never considered the impedance. Damn. I will wait for the amp to arrive. But I was really hoping I didn't need to carry the amp around anytime I wanted to use the cans. Ugh. Lesson learned.

The bass will get better with about 50 hours burn(not like M100 bass but good)now the volume I'm not sure about that at 80% on my iPod touch is all I ever needed even on a plane. Maybe ask over at the K545 thread.
