VERY long post. The length people went to for Internet Access
My first modem was 2400 Baud. My friend was worse than me.
Even when 28.8 was the mainstream and 33.3 was leading edge, my friend had to have free internet, but legal. He was a liscenced HAM operator. He lived by the OCEAN so had very poor transmitting abilities. I was about 30 miles inland, California USA. Here's what he did.
I had a dedicated computer room at my house. He installed a tri-band antennae on my roof. He installed a PC in my computer room. It had three serial ports that controlled three digital ham radios, tuned to three different digital frequencies (no analog audio on those channels).
At his house, he would use his PC connected to another HAM radio, transmitting to a 1200 baud ham radio at my house, it would go through the gateway at the PC (his) at my house, and then he would select one of the other 2 2400 baud ham radios to transmit from my house OUT and another for data in. He was able to TELNET into someones ham gateway that had internet access. This was all command prompt driven! But he had FREE legal internet.
I had a shell account and PPP account in 1994. He told me how to telnet via the internet to that gateway. I would then chat in the gateways' chat room, until one day I was told it was illegal, since I didn't own a liscence. The only thing I did on his system at my house was reset the PC once in a while. I would look at the monitor once in a while, but I wasnt allowed to use the FREE internet without a HAM liscense.
I at least had a 28.8 connection. His lowest baud point was 1200 baud, and that wasn't likely too true, since it involved digital transmission, 30 miles from his house to mine via analog frequency. I remember something that the tri-bands were 2 meter, 10 meter, and 500 ?? I think the 500 thing was 1/2 meter?
Did anyone else go through that much trouble? I think its funny. When I turned off the light in my computer room, my PCs had all their LED's blinking, I had 5 PCs, his PC, and a real light show was the HAM radio modems and his monitor. Not to mention my power conditioner, and air-conditioner control, and UPS!! I wish I had a picture today.
All of this, and www wasnt even well known. Even with My ppp account, most places were telnet, archie searches, veronica, and online bbs type things, with some chat rooms. IRC but very few web pages. I had an internet directory YELLLOW PAGES back then it was limited!!
