To me M sounded more exciting/ aggressive then P1. I also prefred design of the M model. I almost purchased P1, but I'm glad that I've waited. I've auditioned P1 couple of times, but I didn't like it that much.
That was pretty much my read on the M as well. The P1's strengths however lie in in its rendering of instrumental timbre and micro detail. If I listened to just metal, rock/pop and electronic music, it would be hard to justify the added expense as I don't think those strengths are essential to those types of music. If like me you have a broader palate that includes classical, jazz (acoustic and electric), folk, prog and other genres than it is not a hard decision to swing the extra dollars for the P1. As I've indicated over on the P1 thread, I think the strengths of each player reflect the dac chips used.
