head-fiers help in answeing: which is better a high end dap or portable windows 8 tablet as transport

guys i really need some help here

i am torn whether i should go back to the dap route or not

i previously owned the fiio x3 and x3 and connected them to my ifi dsd micro connected then to alo mk3 amp but it just could not help me achieve what i wanted in sound quality, then i purchased hp stream a small 7 inch windows 8 tab and used it as a transport to my ifi and alo rig and i feel that i am enjoying it much better

but the downside is the battery life is short as barely i can make a 2 hours listening, if that battery life would only be much longer i would have been happy

by all means i know this is not a portable rig, but it is a great transportable rig that i can enjoy in my house

lately i have been looking at the ak240 but i am worried that if i go the dap route again i will regret it, it seems that i love using the windows 8 tab with jriver and all the pluggins it can provide from eq to other plugins

it seems to me i love eq my music no matter what and color it and to me jriver had a great selection of eq pluggins, i can achieve deep bass thumb and warmth using the jriver eq parametric eq which i could not achieve in fiio daps or even on my iphone or android devices

my question is would i get a great sound quality with the ability to use eq in ak 240 or any other dap like cowon p1 or clayx m as i could with my jriver in the hp stream 7

i think its all about eq for me and i find i am struggling what to do as the big downside is the battery life on the hp stream 7, and i thought if there is any other transport with great eq functionality that comes close to jriver in windows and greta battery life

did you try viper4android? it has quite a few DSP options.

it's going to be hard to get a windowzzz based system to be really light on battery. the other option of course would be to get a device with huge battery and a small processor.

going for a DAP when you don't need portability is only going to cost more(as I expect you to do other stuff with the tablet/laptop and own one anyway), but also as you said really limit your customization ability, be it for the UI or for the sound.

one last option if you're not streaming music, would be to convert your music including the EQ and other DSPs(make sure you apply some kind of gain reduction to avoid clipping). I do that on my DAPs as their internal EQ sucks bad. so I apply crossfeed and parametric EQ to the file itself and problem solved. but it forces you to double your music files as I strongly suggest to always keep an untouched original for the future. but you can keep that original on your home computer or on some external drive.
