Denon AH-GC20 Headphone Discussion Thread

Denon is known for having glorious bass.  I own 5 of their headphones and love the sound signature above all.  I'll be watching this thread to see how these sound.

Ditto. I tried the Globe Cruiser bluetooth a couple years ago and was pleasantly surprised with their sound quality. I recall them having fairly decent bass extension, but didn't particularly like the on-ear design. I read that they also leaked sound quite a bit. Looking forward to these new cans though.

strange, I have never heard of them before. I search for BT Headphones since months, repetedly googled, exchanged info with other people, opened a comparison thread... Why did they never appeared before?
I see they had no much success apparently.
I feel confident that the new one will be a big step up.

Interesting, looking forward to a comparison review by the HF community, especially compared to the M2.

I will do my best :)
Although, given the fame of Denon for bass, I think their most likely target of comparison is the ATH-WS99BT.
But as I anyway have to get a pair of M2 to test, I will do a side by side comparison of Denon, M2, ATH, BBP, Fidelio, Pendulumic, and if I can (if they send it to me) Parrot Zik 2. H8, not probable. Besides, their bass is inferior to the Fidelio and to the BBP, so, why even bothering.
Eventually I could consider (if I have the money) getting again the Urbanite. They had a nice bass.
The Pendulumic are actually not a bassy can, but, I have them in testing.
But apparently the Denon will be out in no less than one month.

No they're not.

We need a ANC bluetooth headphone thread I think. Will start one if nobody else wants too. Hard trawling through discussion about BT headphones with no ANC.

For me these should be compared with the M2 and Symphony 1.

They are travel over ear ANC BT headphones. Their name is a bit of a give away there.

Sure you can compare them to the Audio Technicas etc, but they're meant for enjoying music in noisy environments.

I'm not the only one in the market for high quality bluetooth ANC headphones - as in, all in one wonder 'phones.

So far the wonder 'phones category include:
Over ear:
Denon AH-GC20
Sennheiser Momentum Wireless (M2 AEBT)
Definitive Technology Symphony 1
-----
Parot Zik 2.0
Samsung Level Over
Plantronics Back Beat Pro

On ear:
Harmon Kardon H8
Philips Fidelio NC1

Sure I've missed some out. Not bothered listing old models as they don't really compete in my opinion (e.g. the NC Sony's which suck at ANC apparently, UE9000 etc.)

I've used the Samsung Level Over and the Momentum Wireless.

Samsung Level Over have a bluetooth unit noise issue which makes them a no go in my opinion. Widely reported in Amazon reviews as well, such as on Amazon.de
Also slightly dated. Decent warm sound, above average ANC - better ANC than M2, but more white noise.

M2 are great but have reported bluetooth issues and for me (large ears), far too uncomfortable. For small or medium sized ears only.
ANC average.

From my understanding Plantronics BBP are unsuitable for large ears, and have poor ANC.
My understanding is the audio quality arguably similar level to the Level Over - but very different sound - bass forward
Technically very capable, but bulky.

Zik 2.0 unsuitable for large ears, poor battery, poor customer support, annoying app requirement.
Otherwise good (EQed, app dependent) sound and very good ANC.

Symphony 1 - meant to sound great, great soundstage, some report bass and sound not as good as M2, others state better (soundstage etc.)
Good for classical.
Should be good for large ears but not used.
Availability? Cost a fortune in the UK - £400 (so replacing the $ with a £ which is ridiculous given the M2 retail for £380 in the UK and cost $500 vs Symphony 1 $400).
If I can find them at a reasonable price will actually try them.

Personally think these Denons could be the best.
Just wonder about the ANC ability.

Hopefully will be available in the UK at a reasonable price.
Hoping Custom Cable or Amazon will stock them.

What do you refer to, with "no they're not"?

The Philips are not bluetooth. It makes no sense to put them in this list.
Which NC Sony are you talking about?

I agree with creating a new thread for ANC Bluetooth Headphones: http://www.head-fi.org/t/761870/the-noise-cancelling-bluetooth-headphones-discussion-and-comparison-thread

About comparing the Denon to the ATH, that's my stuff. I will do it in my Huge Comparison thread, which concentrates on the sound, no matter if ANC or not.
I, or anybody who tries both.

As intended here is the thread based on my post. This is something I've been looking at for some time, and had a bit of a different idea so would like to go with this thread:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/761894/the-active-noise-cancellation-bluetooth-headphones-thread-quick-guide-comparison-and-discussion

Really looking forward to the Denon's. Hopefully we can compare them soon.

Unfortunately the Definitive Technology's don't currently seem to have great world wide distribution. Given Denon is obviously more established in headphones hopefully that won't be a problem with these.

Given that you had already asked that "somebody" should open such a thread, I had understood that you didn't want to create it yourself.
I'm not sure to understand, though, why you had to open a second one, "different idea" or not.
But ok...

FINALLY! found some impressions on Denon's Japanese blog:

via google translate:

I've used the AH-GC20 in editorial department

Released late April wireless noise canceling headphones AH-GC20.
Although the last time was a developer interview, this time I used the actual editing section AH-GC20 has just been announced.
In order to verify strength and quality of noise canceling, the usability, it was Burarito try out on a journey of local train.

AH-GC20 press release is here.

AH-GC20 it came to editing part in the mean.
This is a pretty cool feeling even A~tsu without hesitation put on desk.
Developer interviews , as was also in, is it what metal hanger that is gripping the housing to say is very beautiful and sexy.

By the way, in order to carry out the complex folding of the two axes, the inside is like this hanger.
And organic curves, trick gimmick-style feel, and texture of the metal, thrilled come place as a favorite mecha.

It had been mentioned in developer interview for the Year Pat, head band is also very certain of the texture is firm luxury.
Made cushion is high, inside is unlikely that feel even tired and stuffy have long worn because it is also a good material breathable.
Beauty of finish from inside the headrest toward the inside of the hanger, you do not have to get tired even look many times.

0402-04.jpg

Nevertheless, even if it loves in the office doing so, because wireless and enjoyment of noise canceling of AH-GC20 can not enjoy, in the comfortably left behind a stuck job, and of Burarito local train to AH-GC20 one hand I tried out on a journey.

0402-05.jpg

Weekday daytime, train toward the suburbs was vacant.
The first time I tried wearing outdoors, there are still chic and classy design.
Because it is there sense of calm that has a matte black and silver tones, is likely to be able to use it to choose a fashion even in casual suits.

0402-06.jpg

And was keenly aware of the convenience to try using actually is a wireless, yet that the remote control is used.
Since the wire is not, do not have to worry about the cable tangling somewhere in crowded places.
This day had been listening to the music that was in the iPad, it Once you have finished the pairing, without removing the iPad even once from bag, playing at the ear of the remote control switch, fast forward, you can be performed such as tone adjustment, very convenient.

It is almost like your own broadcasting station.
(Remote control iOS and Android supports.)

0402-07.jpg

By the way, even if you use both noise canceling · Bluetooth, battery is capable of continuous playback 20 hours.
If by any chance in the airplane battery and that Bluetooth can not be used when the cut, you can use a wired as a normal passive headphones.
Moreover, since the included cable adopts high-purity oxygen-free copper with excellent transmission characteristics, it is very high quality.

0402-08.jpg

Carry is put in semi hard case accessory, like this.
Since it fits in quite compact, it does not take too much burden even when the a lot of luggage business trip.

0402-09.jpg

The parenthesis is good and contains the DENON logo on the case.

0402-10.jpg

And, Although it is essential for sound, this is Will of ability of the latest Bluetooth model, not at all aware that it is a wireless, high-precision tone.
Also I feel a margin in the high range to low frequency in the wide range.
Bright tone as the direction of the sound, never even though it is in the classic rock, that match the mood of "outside in listening to music", a feeling of energy.

Somehow, I have suits well to the car window of landscape in the positive sound that would also tempted to travel anywhere to.
In addition, although is noise canceling function, dual noise canceling of thanks or, because the car noise even if the train does not really care, you hear may be music to reduce the volume.
Since the volume is that there is no worry of sound leakage small, it is likely to be used without also feel free to people around in crowded places such as commuter train.

This sound, this fit, and noise canceling of ability, Once lined AH-GC20 is to over-the-counter, please try us.

That review seemed very generic to me, but it seems they are slightly bright, have a good soundstage and give around 20h with BT+ANC?

Manual confirms dedicated ANC button, so it can be turned off while in BT mode.

The translation is pretty rough;  just some basic, initial impressions.

But it's a start (a hint more than we knew before), at least until a full review pops up but we'll likely be trying these for ourselves by then.

I liked seeing the pics of the folding joints/mechanism. Looks pretty robust and a bit different approach with them being double jointed to fold.

Also, if they are bright, that may be a first. Don't recall seeing anyone say the other bluetooth headphones were bright (I certainly didn't think the M2s were that bright sounding). It's usually the opposite.

Apr 8, 2015 at 4:48 AM Post #29 of 179
Cheers @gr8soundz, good to finally get some more news on these!

The design seems great.

They've done with the controls exactly what I thought they should have done with the Momentum Wireless when using them - a rocker switch for play/plause and shift up or down for next and previous track. And then a separate volume button.
Should be a lot easier to use and more intuitive.

The real world shots look great. That hanger looks lovely, the soft aluminium.

As I think was mentioned really looks like a cross between the Sony and the Zik.

Think they've got the design nailed.

What other ANC headphones have you tried?

Apr 8, 2015 at 5:10 AM Post #30 of 179
Yeah, I may have said it somewhere, at least it's the first thing I've thought when this thread was opened. Clearly a cross of Sony and Parrott.

About bright ones, akg k845bt, symphony 1, a bit also Senny mm400x and 500x.
Fresh sounding (although with more bass than those bright ones, as i hope the denon will be) the Plantronics and the supertooth freedom.
