Headphone amplifier overload!

Hi All,

Ok, I think after browsing the forums for the past weekend I've settled on the Woo Audio WA5-LE. My questions are: should I pay $1200 for the parts upgrade package and/or Sophia Royal tubes? I have Audeze LCD-3s and JH Audio Roxannes. What sort of diminishing returns does $1200/$2400 more get me. Lastly do you think I choose erroneously and should spend my money on a different amp? Oh, I have an Arcam D33 DAC. Finally, my headphone cables are all balanced, should I purchase cables specific to this amp or just get adapters?

Thanks,

Hello, I dont to be off topic here but wow I didnt know it takes all this to have hi-fi music. I was wondering, do u work in a professional studio or just have all this to listen to the greatest sound possible.

It's just a hobby for me, I suppose the greatest sound possible within my budget is where I'm going. There are a lot of people on these forums that have access to or have purchased a wide array of hardware combinations and I'm just looking for some advice before I take any sort of plunge.

I have the W5-LE. Look at it this way. You could buy lots of different amps then get the LE or get the LE now. Don't know about the parts upgrade. Still every little thing adds a little if synergistically placed.

Just get the Woo and maybe ..................

No but seriously you can drive pretty much anything with the Woo. It is clear and has a sound almost as un-colored as solid state, but lets you listen for hours. No stark highs or ear fatigue.

Pretty sure you could get the parts upgrade at a later time too? Just the cost of sending them back to NewYork which i have done. Ask Jack if they retro-fit the parts upgrade. Go on the Woo thread and learn about the 300b of the month.

Maybe you could end with a standard build, maybe not. These rigs are the sum of all parts, so that is everything up stream and down stream from the amp, including cables and source.

Though many say after all is in place the headphones make the biggest change, just like speakers, as long as everything else scales up well.

Only thing I did different was make it a preamp for a power amp.

So... I guess I was just looking for anyone who had maybe heard it with / without the parts and/or tube upgrade. It's probably not in my budget to just be a stage in an amplifier chain (doesn't it get loud enough - cleanly on its own?)

Maybe a different Woo product someone had experience with their parts upgrade or even had those upgraded tubes in a different product, $1200 seems a lot for technology from 100+ years ago.

As an aside, has anyone heard the JH Audio Laylas?

The one thing that happened to the technology was they learned to cut corners and make tube amps cost less to make.

So... I've read 3 or 4 reviews that specifically say the Woo amps aren't a good match for the LCD-3s. Not that the amps aren't good (they all pretty much said they were great,) but that there's some specific design element in them and/or the headphones that just don't pair well.

Fairly universally people's reviews seem to say the ALO Studio Six is a great match and was almost designed with the LCD-3s in mind. I don't really like the idea of having 4 headphone outs, how much of the technology am I paying for using 25% of the designed output.

So starting from scratch, what are people's recommendations for an amp under $6k that pairs really well with the LCD-3s (I like the idea of a tube amp, but not a deal breaker.)

Thanks,

In my opinion it is not worthwhile spending that much on DACs/amps if my considerations were mostly about sound quality.
