Hi, i'm about to back up my cds but i have a couple of questions first.
Anyone here know of a portable hd player that plays wma lossless files? i heard that iriver only goes up to 192 :<... Can i reencode wmas to mp3s or other smaller types. I'm interested in buying a WMA car player do any support lossless(specs dont say). I'm also wonderng about FLAC, i have the frontend and it wants me to make .wavs first. Is there one where I don't have to make .wavs? thanks in advance.

No portable/mobile devices support WMA Lossless. If you open up the help file for WMP 9 and look up "lossless", it says that WMA Lossless will not be supported on mobile devices. Since it's in the help file, this appears to be Microsoft's official policy. Now that there is competition from Apple Lossless, it's possible that they may change this policy one day.

I am also unaware of wma lossless portable or car players. The rio karma plays .flac and you can always connected it to the aux input of any car stereo (riovolution.com forums have several examples of people doing karma car setups under different conditions) and play .flac in your car.

As for encoding flac, you will have to make .wav first but you should be able to find software that automates the entire process and deletes the .wav after encoding to .flac. I use grip to do this in GNU/Linux, I'm sure others can recommend suitable solutions for Microsoft operating systems.

I've never used it that way, but I'm pretty sure EAC can be used to create FLAC files. It will rip to WAV first, but you can set it up to delete the WAV after converting to FLAC. You will need to use the actual FLAC program rather than the front-end, so you'll need to figure out the FLAC command line parameters you want to use. It looks like the only really important parameter is the level of compression, so that shouldn't be too bad.

I've been looking at car stereos and that one is under serious consideration (BTW, it is 4600). I have read that in an in-store test it didn't handle directories, nested or not, despite literature claims to the contrary. He bought a Clarion and was happy with it. The Clarion doesn't do WMA lossless, though. Directories are more important to me than lossless, especially in the noisy van I have. I need to make a test disc myself for the next time I go out. Last time, I didn't know about the directories issue.

Hopefully panasonic fixes their problems, having a 10 cd changer+1 cdplayer lets you have about 24+ lossless cds in your car at a time.

something a little off topic..WHY does winamp take a ton more resources than windows media player9 with lossless files. jeez..like 4x more..
anyways, thanks to everybody for helping me out.
