Recommendations for On Ear / In Ear Headphones for Colorfly C3 / Fiio EllK Kilimanjaro combo

Hi Chaps and Chapsesses (Meh, the word is allowed on the innernetz),

I've got the above set up and I'm really happy with it. I've paired them with AKG 451's (for now) but I am seriously considering getting some new headphones. I'm considering buying AKG K551's as I can get them for a steal for £100 new from a trusted supplier (Approx $150 USD). I'm concerned about the lack of bass but love the comments about the detail and soundstage on the K551's. I'm thinking that the bass boost on the E11K may help with the lack of bass on the K551's. I know I'll look like a cyberman but I'm not too worried about that.

It's not a done deal yet, I'm wondering what you guys would suggest as a good match up for the Colorfly. I'm concerned as the Colorflys' sound is quite bright that I may need to pair them with a warmer sounding headphone.

Fiio recommend headphones up to 150 Ohms for use with the E11K.

I listen primarily to Rock / Acoustic and occasionally Metal. My budget is £100, not a penny more, no stretching. My set up is a portable set up and that will be its primary use. I've read about the portability issues with the 551's but again, it doesn't bother me.

Any recommendations apart from the 551's? I'm definitely not considering IEM's as I suffer with infections due to an immune deficiency.

Cyberman from Dr Who for the unitiated:-

Any help will be appreciated :regular_smile :

The K550 bass is a little rolled off (not very emphasized), but it does have decent bass extension into the sub bass. I'm not familiar with the AKG 451, so I can't tell you if it's more or less bass. But the price does sound good for the K550s.

If you are worried about the lack of bass emphasis, the K551 supposedly have just a bit more than the K550, and the K545 a good bit more (but not uber bass heavy).

Thanks for that, it's appreciated :regular_smile :.

The bass boost on the E11K might help out if the bass on the 551's is disappointing. The 451's are ok with regards to bass but cymbals sound a little splashy for my ears. Everything in between sounds utterly beguiling, especially the soundstage. I love the 451's contrary to many peoples' opinions but I do believe they have shortcomings when paired with the C3 (they were amazing when paired with a rockboxed Sansa Clip+). I've checked on the K550's so I'm pretty familiar with those but may have to do some research on the K545's.

As stated I'm pretty happy with the set up but it's lacking just a little on the top end and bottom end, it's very subtle but noticeable. I think it's pretty common on here, you get 99% of what you want but still search for that additional 1%. It's immensely frustrating looking for that audiophile sound.

I listen to the C3 on flat (normal). I want it to sound as natural and clean as possible. That's why I was thinking of the 551's, I think they'll give me a little extra on the highs, will make great use of the C3's soundstage and if they lack a little on the low end I can bass boost from the E11K as mentioned earlier (It generally only happens with some heavy rock / metal).

The 551's are out of stock at the moment at the price I quoted but will probably be in stock soon, so I have a little time to consider options.

That's why I posted this thread, 20 years ago I was very knowledgeable when it came to Audiophile hi-fi separates (still am, sort of ) but when it comes to portable digital stuff, my knowledge is a little lacking. So every suggestion is welcomed & appreciated. Just throw out some suggestions, don't be shy. I've seen it on here, certain headphones aren't generally rated only to find that they pair particularly well with a certain amp or DAP. I'm pretty open to all suggestions until the moment I actually click 'Buy'.

Can anyone else think of any others I should consider ?

A lot of head-fiers think that the E11K is the best choice at it's price point for a portable amp with a bass boost. Sure. You might find something else that you feel is a bit better if you could compare them. But without being able to test portable amps, I don't think you could make a better choice for the money.

But if you want to raise your budget, sure. Then there are definitely better options. smily_headphones1.gif

There always is, my friend. Buying gadgets is like a crack addiction. That's why the guys who sell it to us are called DEALERS, It can't be a coincidence  I'm going to exercise restraint for a while and stick with what I've got once I've got the headphones. :beerchug:
