Peoples reactions??

Thread Starter
I recently ran this sort of thread over on the Hifi choice forums (so if some people find this familiar then I apologise) and thought it might be fun here, especially regarding headphones. Basically what are people's reactions when you tell them what sort of Hifi system you have (including Headphone systems) My colleagues generally do a double take have a good laugh and then say to me that I'm mad (or words to that effect!) for spending so much money on it, in particular headphones... Most of them have said that they wouldn't dream of spending much over £10.00 on a pair of headphones, and as for owning a "proper" hifi.......

So over to you

(It may be particularly interesting hearing Judes comments on this if he reads this )

lol... well, I told one of my mates not more than half an hour ago that i've got nearly £3,500 of electronics in my bedroom... and... it was just like

He didn't believe me what so ever... Oh well, his loss, not mine

OMG... I REALLY must NEVER go to a home cinema forum, I'll be 110% bankrupt within a month!!

Mostly the reaction i get is one of polite dismissal: a vague, nondescript compliment followed by a quick topic change
p.s., their reaction changes to silent disbelief (and usually their mouths are stuck in a very wide open position) when i slip the headphones over their ears

well, it's not that bad here..yet.., getting a portable headphone-amp will raise some questions

my parents don't trsut my sanity anyway, they're just "well, it's your money" while thinking I completely lost it , my friends were already shocked when I bought a pair of 20$ earbuds...one friend is into home-theater stuff a bit, so he somewhat understands the urge to get something better..headphones he don't understand tho.

i'm not going to explain tho, no use. most people I know don't sit down and listen to music, to them music is just something to beat the silence with. shame really.

I went to Best Buy recently wearing a pair of my trusty Sony E888 earbuds... A salesperson asked me "how much did I pay for those?" I told him, "$80." The salesman shouted, "You paid that @#$%ing much for that @#$%ing pair of $%@#ing earbuds? I would never pay more than $8 for any #@%$ing pair of #@%$ing earbuds! @#$%&^*@#&^R^*!!!"

Easiest thing to do for me is to let them listen. The audio system does the talking best by itself, and they're usually pretty convinced by the end. But they still shake their heads at how much the system costs.

I have a friend who was ribbing me about how much money I've spent on audio equipment. This particular friend is a coffee addict, drinking perhaps 8 to 10 cups per day.

I explained to him that good quality audio equipment will last at least 20 years or more, giving me entertainment and pleasure 365 days per year and asked him to work out how much he would spend on coffees in 20 years at $1.00 per cup.

That shut him up.

My friends understand somewhat... Once they hear the sound, they basically understand, though the whole headphone concept is away from them, they would probably see me better off spending the $1000 or so of my headphone system into a speaker system (yeah right). However, this one friend wants me to buy these $300 sunglasses... he bought them and, uh, I would *never* EVER spend more than $20 for sunglasses (Oakley juliets that is, he got his perscription lenses scratched, so I just laughed at him )

nah, it's never a good reaction.
so I just keep it to myself.
well, at least I know another person who's a headphonephile
but, everyone else just do not get it.

If someone is trying to convince me to try a $9.99 pair of Sony MDR-201LP's, I'd tell him (or her), "Fuggettaboutit. There are absolutely no decent-sounding mid-size headphones priced that low." - and then realize (without telling him/her so) that twice that much buys a decent entry-level mid-size headphone (Koss Sporta Pro).

If I tell people I spent $79.99 on my Sony EX70's they say something like "holy crap thats a lot" or something like that but they don't really make that big of a deal about it. At least the ex70's don't stand out much and I don't have a really expensive system. My friends called me crazy for spending $299 Cnd. on the Sony D-EJ915 then it started screwing up so I was kind of happy and returned it. They'd look at the remote on it and say something about how cool it is but then when they find out how much it costs they say something about how stupid it is. I'm just like well if your too cheap then buy a cheap ****ty cd player I'm not stopping you. People just don't get it.
One of my friends said something about how stupid I was to spend $300 on a cd player but then he mentioned how he did pay $300 for his Oakleys. Now he's talking about buying the Sony D-EJ915 cause its $50 off. I think he understands now.
