AKG K240S Mods (Earpads etc.)

I just nabbed a new pair of K240S to add to my collection of cans off of Ebay. Ended up being 82.99 + 10 shipping, not a bad deal Anyway, I've read numerous reviews on these and have noticed people mention that the pleather pads get kinda hot and uncomfy after a while. I figured theres gotta be at least a few people who have modded their pads for this reason, but since the search is down and google didn't find much of anything I figured I'd ask my fellow head-fiers. So has anyone tried anything like Senn or Grado pads on these babies and had a preference? Also anyone tried swapping out the cable for something more exquisite? Thanks for any input.

Beyer DT880 pads work (with some struggling) on the K240S, and although some aspects of their sound I thought were improved with the Beyer pads, sibilance is also increased, which is why I had to switch back to the pleather. But they are far from being uncomfortable with the stock pads.

Cool thanks for your input ReDVsion. I also noticed that like the 271 and 171, these have a mini XLR cable that plugs into them. Is the mini XLR plug on the cable a male? I may order one and build my own cable.

I got them new at Guitar Center for $80 including tax... Saddly, they had something stuck in the right driver that caused some buzzing... I might pick them up again though.

If the DT880 pads fit, the DT440/660/880 pads should work, too - and these would be in black, so it shouldn't change the looks too much overall... Personally, however, I only have problems with the K240S pleather pads, when it's very warm outside (~ > 30 °C).

Greetings from Hannover!

ZuCable offers a Mobius cable for the 271. It may also fit the 240S. It's $99.

Stefan AudioArt also has an equinox replacement cable. And yes, the K271/K240 both use the same cable.

Yeah a saw that Zu had an AKG cable, it would definently fit but @ $100 I'd rather make my own...

I'm going to be making two cables for it... I'll be using silver plated OFC with teflon dieelectric in a triple braid, with techflex of course. A four foot for portable use with the SWITCHCRAFT TA3F and CANARE F-12, and an eleven foot for home use with SWITCHCRAFT TA3F and NEUTRIK NP3C. Nice thing is I'm using similar parts to the Zu and my cost will be a little less than $20 a cable.
