Sennheiser 170 (wireless); faint whine that can be eliminated

When an audio signal kicks in, especially at a low (soft) level signal, these phones produce a faint whine - when the phone volume is turned up all the way.  I suspect it is a carrier wave artifact I am hearing.

However, I just discovered if I lower the setting on the headpiece, perhaps 5 or 6 clicks below max, the whine totally disappears, even if I crank up the amplifier volume to previous levels.

Can anyone elaborate on what I may be hearing and what's going on?

Thanks,

Jerry

Anyone hear a mid-pitched whine with Sennheiser wireless phones?

I own the RS180. I do not hear any noise.

The RS180 is the open back and newer version to the HDR series, correct?  I wonder what the wireless component differences might be?

The RS180 using the same Kleer technology as the RS170, so the 180 receiver can be paired with the 170's transmitter and vise versa.  I believe they came out roughly the same time.  The newer version of these would be the RS175 and RS185.  Yes, the RS180 are open back and are more musical than the RS170 where the 170 are closed back and leaning toward movies. That's why the 170 transmitter has bass boost and surround functions and the RS180 don't.  Is it the noise that you heard could be from those functions?

No, I have those functions turned off. It is only evident when the phones sense a signal with its volume control turned all the way up. Fortunately, as I just discovered, when I turn the headphone volume down a few clicks and raise the amp volume an equivalent amount, the whine is not heard.

What I find psychologically interesting is as I peel away various layers of distotion, which occurred when I got a new amp, and then the Schiit Wyrd, the headphone whine became more of a conscious problem to the extent that I was finally motivated to eliminate it.

Hi,i have rs 170 and can hear hum in the background that is irrevelant of soun level.
One thing that maybe can produce tha hum is ac/dc adapter.
Can i use external powerbank or something else instead of original power supply?
