Using amps with source headphone outputs

When I use my new Total AirHead with a source like the little Sangean/Radio Shack/Roberts radio, which doesn't have a line-level output, is there any theory-based reason for having the source's volume set at a particular level, e.g. mid or max?

I know the principle of 'suck it and see' probably applies as much to this as anything else, but I'd be interested in other members' ideas on this.

On their website is says to have the source volume set to a little over half. Thats what i recall, not 100% though...best to just experiment.

Too low and the signal-noise ratio is not good; too high and the source hp out would clip. You'd just have to experiment. Yes their site says a little over half, but out of my TV for example I had to set it at about 20/100 to avoid clipping.
