Hmmm, do you think there will be confusion and someone will think they're buying the plane and wind up with the amp. Well, let's look at the price tags:

SR-71 Stealth - 2,000,000,000.00 Guess
SR-71 Stealth - 395.00

I'm guessing that will stand out to someone, though we are dealing with the government here...

If only I could have a "Blackbird" insignia etched onto the amp, it would be so cool.. But maybe that would invite Copyright/Trade mark violations if it were made standard for the commercial version of SR-71..

And, is there a way to use AC power at home?? Since it costs as much as a PPA and has the sound to match it, it would only make sense if it was capable of running off of a AC power Wall Wart.. I will know an answer tomorrow anyway when I would be able to audition the SR-71 during the Florida Head-fi meet..

I would have, if only the XP-7 had the same price and form factor (with the power supply)

Looks really nice...but owning an XP7 it doesn't make sense to get one. Maybe I would have bought one if this was out as I got my XP7...

XP7 is more transportable than portable.

I would really like to know the difference in sound between the XP7 and the SR71.

In a nutshell, I couldn't hear one during the time I listened to it and I was switching back and forth between the two. One might emerge over a longer time, but since I don't have one, I can't provide that information...

I will hook it up side by side with the Stealth and HR-2 over the weekend (if the wife does not have too many tasks lined up) and see if I can hear and differences using a Meridian as a source. Like I said in another thread I have been listening to this little beauty with a Panasonic CT570 and the sound is amazing. I have been using Porta Pros and the Senn PX-200's. Later on I will be switching to the Ety 4S.

I'll try and do a side-by-side with the XP-7 and the SR-71 when my "Blackbird" gets here in a few days (fingers crossed). BTW, I'll be running both off of battery b/c I do not have the extra power pack for the XP-7.

Well I was able to take some time for listening this afternoon and early evening. I was disappointed because I could not find the extension cable that allows me to listen to the HD-600's with the SR-71. As with many things in this house it was not where I remember putting it. The next headphone on my hard to drive list is the AKG-401. These were one of my first quality headphones so I know them well.

My first task was to try and set the volume at the same level on the SR-71, Stealth and HR-2. Tiny differences in volume can easily trick one into thinking that one amp is better than another. I had time enough to listen to one CD on all three amps. I chose Holly Cole's CD Temptation. This CD has some excellent bass passages and that coupled with piano and her vocals make it a pretty good choice if you have to pick one CD.

Finding differences between these three amps was far more difficult than finding the similarities. The 401's are hard to drive and the SR-71 had absolutely no problems. The bass passages were clear and crisp and response to the piano was immediate with no slowness. I bought one of the first HR-2 amps and have used it almost every day since I got it. The Stealth has been employed as a preamp with only occasional headphone listening and I have had an SR-71 for about 4 days. Based on one CD I would be hard pressed to say that there is any difference between the HR-2 and the SR-71. I think that they have different op amps so with more time and more music I am sure that I could pick out differences. The Stealth and the SR-71 were also very, very close but I found the tube amp just a little smoother. I would describe in wood working terms. My example would be a 90 degree corner on a box. When you feel it when just made it is sharp and precise almost sharp; this would be the HR-2 and the SR-71. The corner after you have taken one pass of the finest sandpaper is the stealth. You can feel the difference but the change is imperceptible to the eye.

In summary I think the SR-71 is a real winner. It is an amazing amp for its size and I would not hesitate to recommend it. At work I used it all afternoon with my ETy-4S and PCDP and it made them sing as well.
