Best MP3 player for working out/running

I have never owned or used MP3s before. I have been using a Sony sports style radio for running and working out. The reception for the tuner sucks pretty bad when inside a gym. Plus, I figure it is time to jump into the new age and MP3s. Anyone have suggestions for a newbie for a rugged, easy-to-use player good for exercising?

I recently purchased an Apple Ibook, so I will use the player with that. From the research I have done, it appears that most players work fine with Apple. So I am not merely relegated to the Ipod.

I don't want to break the bank, particularly since I am new to this.

I have been reading as much as I can. A lot of reviews and other posts praise the Iriver product line. I know that the Ipod gets very good reviews. But the Ipod does seem pricey.

I appreciate any thoughts/comments/suggestions/recommendations.

Thanks.

Creative Nomad MuVo. It's light weight, long battery life.
I ve worked out with this player for year, and it's still wroking fine.
Sound quaility is soso, but it's selling around 70 in Wal-mart

well the iPod is pricy but is worth it in my eyes. I use it at school, jogging, reading, basically anything. Should just save your money for an iPod. Rather have something that will last than some cheap thing that isn't very good.

for working out the ipod trumps all. becasue of the buttonless interface you cant ruin any parts with sweat and stuff.

Wouldn't a flash based player be better than a HD based player? I thought that HD players can get damaged by movement when the HD is being read.

yeah it's a really bad idea to jog with an hd based mp3 player. Every time you jumble it while the hd is spinning there is a big chance your hd will be destroyed.

For the past 8 months I've been using a Rio Nitrus and it's worked out very well. It seems to be very durable. I've dropped it a several times and it keeps going strong. Twice I've dropped in on a treadmill where it hit the track and shot off the rear taking a couple of hops on the floor. Each time I picked it up and plugged the headphones back in and it keeps on playing. Sound wise it's ok ( I use the PX-200 with it ) but it's just mp3s and I'm not to concerned with sound quality when I'm trying to get that 15th rep complete on the third set of bench presses. I get about 15 hours on a single charge so battery life is fine. I'd recommend it pretty highly.

I see a lot of people at the gym using the new iPod Mini. Almost all of them wear them in an arm band holder.

i think armbands and such do a pretty good job at minimizing the amount of shock the player sustains, so hard drive players aren't too bad of a gamble while running. however, flash players are smaller and are %100 skip free, meaning it will not be damaged while running. it relly depends how big of a player and how much space u need. if u want gigs, then its obvious u need a hard drive. if 256mb or 512 will do, i had good experiences with iRiver's flash players. they have plenty of features and fm radio when i grew tired of my mp3's.

Flash or HD

Yeah I was wondering if anyone has had serious problems running or working out with an HD player. I see a lot of people with the Ipods and the Ipod Minis at the gym. So the problem with those must not be bad.

I just wish the Ipod Mini had a tuner. Maybe the Iriver line is the way to go.

I'm going to guess the Sanza Fuze is the biggest recommendation out there?

Oh GOD That is a 6 year bump haha. I was waiting for someone to post the Clip or Fuze haha.
Well I'm just gonna say Clip/Fuze then
iPod Nano 5G too if you want to use that.
