Different speaker types' characteristics? - Page 2

this is off topic, but what the hell.

i noticed last night that when i was listening on my couch, as i moved my head forward off the couch by about a foot, the sound changed quite noticeably. i think the harshness went down and there was more depth in the sound. instruments came from more of a 3-d area than just a plane behind the speakers.

now...would this be because i have a firm leather couch and when i rest my head back on it i'm getting some reflections from it, or is that ridiculous and this is a listening position/placement issue?

any ideas? i think i'm nuts, but it was quite different and i much preferred it with my head forward.

position not off-topic

position can often impact sound considerably. Some speakers beam more so than others, sweet spot is the G-spot of speakers, basically your favorite spot where it all comes together balanced etc... but can play around with placement angles and create different sounds. Sometimes I like to point the speakers inward at each other to create a larger soundstage, uh I think that is the effect? Anyway, for me moving forward, L/R and even up/down can change the sound more than subtly.

Of course many variables dependent on your system, results will vary

Tomek:

My systems' sound changes radically depending on my position in relation to the speakers, nevermind the speakers' placement in the room. There is only one point where I hear it at its best, and I have a visual marker to help me (or anyone else) locate that spot. I know if I'm off by what I hear. I far prefer a speaker that delivers good sound to a single place instead of one that sounds worse trying to please everyone in the room. Sit upright; as you've found, it really helps. One more thing: I notice a lot of people sit waaaay too far from their speakers. I set myself around five feet from mine.

MonkeyBusiness: The ionophone review was virtually ecstatic. The price of the speakers is a problem however "Price: $23,500 " I don't imagine you could run a plasma close to the ears to make headphones.
