Does microphone input matter?

Along with clear/great sound, I also am looking for a great sounding microphone.  I just recently purchased the Mayflower O2 + ODAC combo for my PC setup (games/music).  I have the modmic 3.0 for my headphones that I use for ventrilo/teamspeak chat.  I was previously using a cheapo soundlbaster card, but my microphone was plugged into that.  What do I plug my mic into now?  Just onboard PC mic input?  My initial thought is that it's going to sound worse through that than before.  Am I missing something or just over thinking it?

Unless your microphone needs a powerful preamp (or again why would you even need a mic like that), no need to overthink it. You're going to speak to video game teammates, not recording your performance of Ombra Mai Fu that will be recorded and sent to an opera director as your audition tape. Alternately, think of how many soldiers run around with the best AKG condenser microphone and a full recording console when speaking to the rest of the squad, which is zero (that includes the people in the command center).

Unless of course you really want max fidelity for your voice when you bark orders or hurl insults at somebody's mother
