Are you looking for floor standing or bookshelf? I have the cambridge soundworks Newton series M80's, on sale now for 319 dollars. They are a three way with an 8 inch woofer and a silk dome tweeter. They sound great in a nearfield setup, but I suspect would perform just as well filling a large room. I think the CSW's are the unsung heros the bookshelf world.

I bought some used Von Schweikert VR1 (list $1000). I've seen them as cheap as $600 used if your patiuent and can stretch the budget a bit.
They have awesome imaging and great bass for a monitor. I've heard they're really good w/ a sub too but haven't got round to that part of my system yet.
You might do a search on these and see what others have written. I have no regrets and everyone who's heard them in my system has been impressed.

Don't forget the Klipsch RB-XX series. Great detail, and value for the money.
