I know this question does not belong on Head-Fi, considering its a headphones fourm, but the people here know a lot about all kinds of audio including speakers so here it goes. Im lookin to buy a new set of speakers, surround sound or home theatre. Im looking for a set thats good for music. Clear, full, ect. ect. ect. Im on a tight budget, I can spend around $500. Any suggestions before I go buy the Promedia 5.1 Ultras?

-Thx

Logitech G680s were available for $200 at circuitcity not too long ago. I felt like they were better than most speakers under $500.

Are you looking for a powered set to connect to a computer, or non-powered for use with an amplifier? I started with a set of Energy speakers in my first home theater set up, similar to these:

A little over your budget, but they sound great.

Thanks, that one for $630 (approx) looked good but I think I would be happier with the 5.1 Ultras. Preferably im looking for powered speakers to connect to a decoder for use with my mp3 player but if there is a ht system that comes with an amp and gives me more quality than the Ultras I would get that, as long as it supports prologic 2.

Cambridge/Creative Labs Megaworks are also worth looking at.

if you're looking for a home theater setup, go buy the Yamaha HT setup thats $499. I forget the model number, but its supposedly amazing!! Onkyo also makes one that is a sick deal for the $. You get dolby digita/dts receiver, 5-6 speakers, and a sub. I got my kenwood 6.1 setup for 499 3 years ago hookedup to my PC and its great sounding couldnt be happier

I would go with very reputable energy take 5 or elac cinema one series for surround speaker packages.

Thanks for that suggestion regarding the Take 5+1's. What reciver would you reccommend to use with them, or do they have one included?

My max budget now is about $700 so I can spend a bit more

at this price range, look into pioneer vsx-d 814/812 or vsx50 receivers.

TAS just recently published a recommended list of speakers, and some of them were under US$500. You should search out the latest issue.

Make sure you take a look at the speakers gallery before deciding. There are many more of the kind of speaker you're looking for than you'd expect..

Any of the Canadian companies have fine 2 way monitors for under $500 new and are heavily discounted on internet:
PSB
Paradigm
Energy

You could also get used PSB Stratus Mini for $500 at Audiogon pretty easy.
TAS (the absolute sound magazine) list Dusty refers to has couple British monitors under $500:
Epos ELS3 $329
Monitor Audio Bronze B2 $399

Look at the B&W LM-1's for under $500. Great small speakers.

PLENTY of small bookshelf / mini monitors around these days and they're really nice. You really need to listen to them for sound preference, but forllowing are some brands I've been impressed with in the last year while I was looking (all around 400-750 range - both new/used)

Castle
ProAc
Roksan
Snell
Mission
Totem
