I'll take my $10 Yamaha speakers over my Shure E5 and PPA+Diamond Buffer+Steps anyday. Seriously!

I agree with that quote also, it is the best way to listen to music, there is nothing on your head ( so you don`t have to worry about somethign clamping your head or if it is comfortable ).

The only problem is other people who don`t wana hear the music..maybe i shoudl buy them ear plugs..

I listen to headphones, but only out of necessity. I've just spent about $500 on a new amp/ phones combo with interconnect, etc., and I'm very happy with it to say the least. However, it's extremely frustrating to know that I could have so much better. Here's the deal:

I have about $1500 in my bank account AFTER I bought the MG Head and 600s. I have about $150 of cash at home. I have a nice car, I live at home, I don't really go out much (I'm pretty socially inept, actually). I've got the bucks to get a pretty nice speaker system. However, there remains one thing in my way:

My mother. She thinks it is utterly ridiculous to spend as much money as I have already on audio stuff. When I wanted to get an interconnect for my new amp and phones, I had to sneak it in behind her back. If I asked her if I could spend ~$1000 on a decent speaker setup, she'd go nuts! She'd go nuts if I told her I was spending any more money. It's sad, really .

Sorry about the ramble. Basically, I'd prefer speakers AND headphones, but a good speaker system is just not accessible to me at this point. When I get to college, it will be another story entirely.

Depends.

Mostly I like speakers better, for the reasons already mentioned: soundstage, mobility, comfort.

However, there are times when I really prefer headphones. Examples: when it's 2 a.m. and I don't want to wake anyone else in the house. When I really want to hear all the details. When I don't want to hear anything else. Stuff like that.

I WOULD like speakers better if I could afford good ones.

For now, however, I can be almost anywhere in my room with my cans on and not need to worry about being in the 'sweet spot' for my speakers, and they aren't even close to good anyway (Logitech Z680s multimedia speaker system). If I were a millionair (spending thousands on speakers) I would like them better. Some day I will be financially stable enough to be a speaker enthusiast as well, but that time is not now

I only listen to headphones because all the speakers I own suck (and I can't afford better ones and I wouldn't have any place to put them).

60% 2.1 speaker rig
40% headphone rig

BUT

I like my headphones more than my speakers because of SQ.

BUT

Speakers are more convenient.

AND

Sometimes... I'm just too damn lazy to put on my A900's.

It really depends on my mood. There are times when I want to close out the world completely and enjoy the music. At these times headphones are indispensable. I also use them while I am at the PC at night.

I have a pair of Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III Special Editions that I can listen to for hours. When I don't have to worry about disturbing anyone I listen to them. Headphones cannot duplicate the soundstage as has been said.

Intersting hold thread. I only have headphones but, considering what I am investing on them, I am starting to think about getting a speaker system.

Tough part will be incorporating loud music into the family ecosystem.

I very much prefer to listen with speakers, but find headphones to often be more convenient (listening without bothering my spousal unit).

I use both headphones and speakers. Having grown up using speakers it makes the environment feel more balanced and not graveyard lifeless silent. I've only gotten seriously into headphones in the past two years due to having moved in five years ago into a building with pretty thin floors. My downstairs elderly neighbor also suffers from dementia so it has definitely been an adjustment and balancing act to make sure am doing nothing to aggravate her on my part. Unfortunately with dementia it can lead to aggressive outbursts like door slamming and vocal outbursts from the elderly neighbor due to environmental triggers having nothing to do with me.

Thanks to Head-fi though and the advice of my program director who subleases the apartment for community living for the disabled i discovered the wonderful world of headphones which sound even better then speakers. Using bookshelf speakers at commonsense volume levels during the day and nearfield listening at night also keeps me a happy boy without any distractions of guilt if the environment feels too quiet and needs a bit of a spark :D

I like my headphones, but I miss having good speakers. I have a home theater system that's pretty good, but not really all that great for serious listening, especially vocals. I'm seriously considering either building speakers, or looking for a good used pair. There's something about the presentation and soundstage you get from speakers that headphones just can't match.

OTOH, headphones are great if you want to get lost in the detail of a good recording, especially late at night.
