Speakers

Do you prefer headphones or speakers to listen to music on an average, everyday basis? Why/Why not

For me, I like heapdhones (I'm sure this will be how 99% of you are). I feel I can pick out the finer details in songs better and when using headphones it's a more personal listening experience, rather than a 'hey everyone come listen, it's party time' experience.

I use my speakers more because of three things:
1) My A500s don't fit my left ear, I don't know why, otherwise they're awesome once I get them situated.
2) My eggos sound good enough only for portable usage (speakers are much better)
3) People randomly come and go in my room and having headphones on is a nightmare with them.

I prefer speakers simply because you can multitask WAY easier. No wires on your head, plus, you can hear other things happening, like your door opening or someone calling your name.

Actually, you'd be surprised.

But yes, headphones rule.

I prefer Orpheus' wall of speakers ( 2 x Urei 815A) when it is time to scare the neighborhood into thinking there has been a small earthquake

Listening to his speaker rig gave me insight into what great speakers can do. I think I will prefer them, when/if I ever get a good home to put them it, with a good listening room, etc, etc, etc...But until then can will have to be my forte.

I was ever so slightly dissappointed when I didn't get a chance to crank Orpheus's Urei's My speakers aren't quite as good as Orpheus's rig, but hey, I just changed my sub over to sealed and reintegrated it with my system tonight and I'm in love all over Definitely speakers for me. It's gotten better already!

I still prefer speakers, and it'll take a hell of a good headphone sound to change that.

I find speakers more relaxing to chill out to. You don't have to have something wrapped around your head or planted in your ears, which is always vaguely distracting.

Speakers.

Headphones are indispensable to me though.
But speakers are more natural and like the real thing.
And I find studio monitors just as detailed (not bright) as headphones.

60% speaker listening
40% headphone listening

well with me I always have wanted a nice 2 channel speaker setup.
something thats up close and personal..
something like 2 super pavarottis with a nice small johlida tube amp, and something i can sit back and melo out..

but since I know I'll always listen to the headphones more and after some time ill never use the speakers i have to go with headphones.

and after obtaining the ps-1, i dont really think about the speaker dream

If I'm sitting down, headphones.

If it's summer, speakers.

If I'm outside, headphones

Speakers

I just got me some new Polk Rti10s and I love them. I know they're crap compared to your all audiophile $tuff around here, but I love my crappy equipment and my speakers rock!

Team Onkyo
Team Budget Sounds
Team I use headphones more than speakers 'cause my music is on all day and all night.

Funny, since I like a nice smooth Omega II on my ears to chil out, but that chest-pounding action of speakers can't be beat if you really wanna rock I just need my own house, here in the rurals, and a source for those Urei or something similar. And a Gozilla-like pair of monoblocks to drive them. And a Stealth for a preamp.

I'm fairly new to this headphone business. My impression so far with headphone listening is that the soundstage is very two-dimensional. With speakers (properly set up, of course), you get a 3-dimensional soundstage presented in front of you. There's a depth and layering of instruments that you can pinpoint from a space right in front of you. You can get a sense of where each instrument is in relationships to one another. With headphones, everything seems to be contained within my head. A Saxophonist would be playing in my right ear, the drummer in my left ear, etc. It's a very strange feeling for me. I noticed that with headphones, I pay more attention to tonality, treble and bass extension, and pace. With speakers, I would pay more attention to the presentation of the soundstage.

I agree entirely. With my speaker setup, the music takes on a live-music-like quality to it where I can imagine all of the instruments and players in certain positions infront of me. It is quite the experience. Headphones can not replicate this.
