New to headphone amps, best starter amp?

Hi all,

My names Chris, and I'm looking to purchase my first portable headphone amp. Im not looking to spend huge amounts first, and I've narrowed it down to a Topping NX1, or Fiio E6. I use AKG K451, or a pair of Philips in-ear buds, the number escapes me but they have a great liking on here and sound great.

My main question is, will either of these amps be an improvement over the quality offered by my iPod touch 4th generation? If I like what I hear, I'll be looking to get a desktop amp too.

Looking forward to some wise advice!

Chris.

For a starter portable amp the topping nx1 is great in my opinion especially for the price. You cant really go wrong with it :).

I was thinking Fiio e11k. But once you get that you'll want a desktop amp and once you get that you'll want new cans and they might not be as sensitive as your k451's and then you'll wish you bought an e12 to begin with so just get that :)

Seriously. You will appreciate the lack of background/hiss on the e12 with those 126db cans.

I had an E6 at first and I was really wanting better amp that I could not hold my urge, so 3 months later, found a reaaaaally good deal on Cayin C5 and I immediately bought it without second thought :D

so I'd say buying more expensive and much better amp at first shot is best choice. That is if you could spend the money right away, but this is HEAD-FI, everything will make you spend money here even if you go for some budget amps.
