Back to headphone-insanity – a very short report of trying to get suitable phones

About two weeks ago I started some research about soundcards to improve the sound of my Toshiba laptop. I´m more and more getting used to just using my pc as a source instead of my cd player. One can´t just deny the convenience. As a result of my enquiry I finally decided to buy an Echo Indigo and downloaded Foobar2k. I´m quite happy with this hardware/software-combination. Especially the fact that Foobar provides ASIO output ensures that I can make use of the Indigo´s full potential. So far so good. Originally I wanted to use the Indigo just as an improved output to the amp of my speaker system. But I`m apparently unable to ignore the fact that the Indigo is regarded as a respectable headamp too. And there we go. Some time ago I thought I had finally got rid of the headphone-insanity. I had given my old AKG K500 (the predecessor of the K501) to a friend and sold my AKG K1000 and the dedicated SAC-Amp and had bought a pair of Cabasse speakers. I just kept my Senn PX100 (that I still like a lot for its unrivaled comfort) for occasional use with my Iriver PCDP, but I never really liked the PX100´s bass response. For outdoor use it was alright and I still prefer it to the PX200. But for listening at home it lacks a clean bass and an acceptable soundstage. So my search for a new full sized headphone began. I´m becoming a headphone-loony again! It´s like in the times when I owned the K1000, that I loved for its incredible soundstage but never really liked anyway because of its somewhat lean bass. Well, two things help me a bit: 1.: the Senn HD600/650 are not for me. It´s not the sound, but the discomfort. The clamping force is too strong. When I wear them I always feel a slight pressure from the cushion in front of my ears that I cannot get used to. 2.: I don´t like in-ear-phones on principle. The idea of stuffing something into my ear is just some kind of violation of my bodily integrity. Well, just my opinion, so I hope I don´t make you guys with Etys, Shures and UEs angry. So you see: my choice is narrowing a bit. Today I couldn´t resist trying it out: I just bought two Beyer headphones: the DT931 and the DT880. I have the option to return them within two weeks. BTW: the DT was very cheap: here in Germany it retails for 99€ at Saturn in Düsseldorf. I will post my impression on the phones in a while. Well, if you have read my report about my very personal journey through the world of headphones so far, I would appreciate opinions on my choice as well as tips on where to go if I like neither of these phones.

Hi Matthias,

nice to meet somebody from the same region here on this forum.

I apparently missed to type the number of the Beyer I got for 99€:

It is the DT931.

I paid 209€ for the DT880.

Best regards,

Marco

That's a steal for the 931s! That was probably their old top-of-the-line model (although with Beyer it's hard to tell since they seem to mark all their phones the same price ) Let us know how the two phones compare!

The 600s will loosen up if you stretch the hell out of them for days on end with whole stacks of books placed between them Don't worry, they can take the abuse, I've done it--although I should have removed the earpads before doing it, they got a bit flat after that

Go just around the corner, look at my signature.
Due to job and holidays I'm not in Duesseldorf until the fifteenth of August, but afterwards a mini meet should be easy.
