Totem Rokks, Wow! - Page 3

Congrats on your new speakers!! Go to www.audioadvisor.com and see if they are selling the Bstock Parasound HCA1500A amps for around 600.00. If not check out audiogon. I think the Parasound or Rotel amps are by far the best affordable amps made. The HCA1000A at 125 WPC will drive your speakers also. The 1500A is 205 WPC into 8 and 315WPC into 4 ohm loads. If you are enjoying your speakers now you will really go nuts over them when you put some real amplification to them. Also there is no such thing as to much power. You would be amazed at the amount of power good speakers can handle. However....If you decide to run them with under powered amps that will go to clipping you are taking a big chance on loosing your speakers.

Thanks for the advice. I can handle a jury trial no problem but when it comes to this stuff, I need all the help I can get. I will begin the search for an amp. I guess I know where the money from the future sale of my xp-7 is going. Do I risk damaging the speakers with an amp as powerful as the ones you suggested? Or is the idea to have as much power as you can get and just not go to high on the volume to avoid damage to the speaker.

Ooh, very interesting. I've been curious what a good line array would sound like. I need to find some time to stop by this Selah Audio place, since it's fairly close to where I live.

No risk at all. I've driven B & W CDM1's for close to a year with both a parasound HCA 3500 350/500 WPC 8/4 ohms and for a short time before my Legacy speakers arrived had them biwired up to my Krell amps that were rated at 500/1000 WPC into 8/4 ohms. A friend of mine is using one of the Sunfire Signature amps thats rated at 600/1200 WPC with some small NHT bookshelfs in his den and they are sound very good. I would always start with the volume down when playing music and then go however loud you want from there. But that should be done no matter what your power rating is. I'll send you PM of a test we did wqith some cheapie JBL and Technics speakers to try and ruin the drivers later today. Check out the used Parasound or Rotel 991 amp they should both be below the 500.00 mark.

Thanks Tom. The search is on. By the way, if anyone is interested I just completed my HD 14g 4' speaker wire which are sounding pretty good, if I do say so myself.

If anyone can suggest some inexpensive speaker stands, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm building a pair of Rick's speakers now, he's a great guy and is highly recommended on Audio Asylum. Its a pair of line arrays with 6 7" vifa mids and a pair of Newform 3 foot ribbon tweeters.

Congrats on your new speakers Tyrion!

I think my next pair of speakers will be the Mani-2. Then I don't have to bother with a sub. Although I do think the Mani-2 will be rather fussy to setup (to get the bass right).

highflyin9, YOU LUCKY DOG!!

I recommend the partsexpress $99 stands as a great value. Big beefy, relatively cheap. Might want to make sure they fit the base of whatever speakers you settle on though.

I can only imagine what those speakers sound like, highflyin9. ooheadsoo, I will check partsexpress. I should have added that the stands would have to receive my wife's approval. Wish me luck.
One question, if I buy a power amp instead of an integrated amp. would I then control the volume with my hd300 preamp? Thanks.

Yes, you'll need a preamp for volume control as well as source input.

Ha! You were the one who grabbed those :)

I had my eyes on them, 275.01US and in black if I'm not mistaking correct?

I almost bought a pair of Rokks a year ago when I was shopping for my speakers, I had checked out paradigms, monitor audio, kef, triangle, etc. etc.. and really liked the totem sound. Finally I grabbed some Arro's! They were a kind of compromise between floor and bookshelves speakers, offering almost as much resolution as bookshelves but going much lower!

Anyhow, you said it yourself, great little speakers!

And... Daaam.. If you ever plug them into some very high end amplification I swear they will blow you way, heard them with 5k+ of tube gear... Wow! T'was like they were a totally different pair of speakers!

Welcome to the Totem owners family

And yeah, the Mani-2 is in a totally different league.. Haven't heard it, but they go for about 3k-4k I think, use a push-pull system for their woofers, not your average 'bookshelf' speakers!

The Rokks are mahogeny. I wanted to get the Arro's but I couln't not the guy down far enough and he sold them. I am going to keep a lookout for Arro's. I have Epos ELS3 on the way (I can't resist a good deal). I am going to compare to the Rokks and decide which to keep or move to another room.
