interesting question i had some months ago and then thought its impossible so i forgot about it.

what is the difference between how the sd in the lets say x3ii and the x5 is connected? one has 1 slot and the other 2.
is it possible to somehow externally by soldering and such plug 2 sd cards in parallel-series into 1 slot? or does it also depends on hardware?

This is what would happen if I would indulge in "soldering and such":

This soldering business is WAY to complicated for me:

Feels very good. It's smooth but not slippery. Buttons are recognizable on touch and easy to press. The finish is very good in my opinion. The leather/case feels strong but is not overly thick, much better than the FiiO X3 leather case which was a bit thick/bulky.
All I need :D

Where did you found the leather case, because I really want one to :D

Just got my new X3 yesterday. I am loading the card right now. As I wait, listening to the old guard iPod nano 7g that the X3 will replace. Not sure if I'll use the Picollo with it as I want to see how it sounds by itself. Amping can already be an option...

Once you warm up to it, let me know what I could expect going to an X3ii coming from Nano 7G (what I've got).
Purely sound, obvious differences aside.

Each SD slot occupies an SDIO channel on the SoC, so no, you can't use solder something to make it work.

thanks. this is whz i initially have abandoned the idea, now its confirmed.

Does anyone know if the x3 decodes dsd in dac mode when hooked up to a mac? I've heard a few people say they thought the dsd dac decoding was windows only and I see Fiio mentions its supported on windows through a plug in but nothing about mac.

I got mine working with a Centon Rush 256GB USB flash drive and an Inland OTG Cable (micro USB male to USB A female). Here's a link to the flash drive:

http://www.amazon.com/Centon-Electronics-256GB-DataStick-S1-U3R2-256G/dp/B00EPDCLY6/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1430013403&sr=1-2&keywords=centon+usb+flash+drive+256

I don't think there's anything special about the cable, but I've gathered from research that the flash drives (or microSD cards or ssd drives) can be hit or miss, depending on the controller that the drive uses.

I did not have success with a microSD card and microSD OTG adapter that I tried,

In my experience, you may need to reboot the X3 after attaching the drive/cable before you see the OTG drive.

Ok thanks, I think I'm going to order one from amazon and try it out as buying microsd cards can get expensive after awhile (already have 3 64gb one for my x1). When I get mine I'm going to try it hooked up to a powered hard drive and see if I have any luck I've heard people have success with this with the DX90.

Exactly what I was quoted for mine to Calgary, Canada. Expecting mine this week, I hope... if Canada Customs ever gets off their arses!

@hakushondaimao hopefully yours will be there soon. It's truly a great case.
Lucky me didn't need to pay extra (import taxes).

Otherwise it would become a very expensive case.

Not sure if firmware tools have been shared here already or not, but if anyone is interested in doing some custom themes, you can use the tools below to unpack the firmware.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/tezgcmfzckez8gj/X3II_firmware_tools.zip

Place the X3II.fw file into the folder with pack.bat, unpack.bat, etc. files then double-click on unpack.bat. A folder named X3II should appear and then you can go to work :p Once you're done, double-click on pack.bat then update your firmware on your player.

I have been using the X3ii for the better part of today and got to say I am impressed. Can easily drive my Xoaomi Pistons and Sennheiser Momentum In-ears without flinching. I used my iPod Nano 7g amped for hikes, walks and general travel. Basic ability (better expansion in storage, and ability to play FLAC and such) aside, this really does have a nice sound. Using the same Cirrus DAC as my AK100ii, I believe. Can hear the similarities. The X3ii has some nice depth and clarity. I do miss the simplicity of the Nano's interface. Love the touch screen. Not crazy about the click wheel, but with better folder management (thanks Brooko), it is ok. Once I do some more listening, I'll do some comparisons with Nano and some of my other DAPs.
At this point, money well spent. Really liking what I'm hearing.

Forgot to mention that this is really a step up from the X1. The X1 had a hard time with power. That really needed an amp to shine. The X3ii sounds more detailed and seems faster in presentation. Finding my X1 a new home, the X3ii is going to replace this and my Nano 7g...

Before i jump in, are these accessories worth the extra cost?

http://www.amazon.com/X3-Generation-Resolution-ProStudio-Accessory/dp/B00W5T5QBW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1430102310&sr=8-2&keywords=Fiio+X3

or do i just go with the bare player and get the SD card separately.....
