I've got a Moon Audio Silver Dragon cable on the way for my Sennheiser HD 650s (which are powered by a Perreaux SXH-1), and I figured it was also a good time to upgrade my source (an M-Audio Revo). After looking through the computer-as-a-source forum, I'm thinking a EMU 1212m is the way to go. The 1212m's analog output is supposed to be very very good, but apparently tends towards the cold and analytical side.
Since the 1212m has 1/4 analog ins and outs, and I hate using adapters, I'm also thinking it may be time to upgrade my interconnects. I currently use a combo of monster cable and acoustic research ($15 - $30 range at best buy), all copper. I figure if I'm gonna upgrade one, I may as well upgrade them all... so I'm going to need 3 interconnects: a 2m 1/4-to-rca, a 2m rca-to-rca, and a 4m rca-to-rca. Due to lack of funds after purchasing the silver dragon and the 1212m, I'm looking at "budget" cables. The Headphile "CPU" series has caught my eye, but I can't decide between the copper vs the silver, since they're about the same price.
I'm leaning towards the silver, since I'll have silver at the end of my chain anyway (the moon audio)... but I'm wondering if an all-silver interconnect setup will bring out harshness out of the 1212m. On the other hand, while it seems like using copper interconnects might "tame" any harsh high end tendencies the 1212m would have, and add some warmth... I have never tried combining silver and copper in the same chain and I'm thinking that it might be a pipe dream to hope the combo would bring out the best benefits of both. I'm expecting it might be more likely that such a combo would be more likely to dull the benefits of both, giving me a muddy combination. Does anybody have any reccomendations?
For what it's worth, the perreaux has reputation as a very smooth and warm amp for a solid state amp, although I personally have no basis of comparison for that statement.
