Oh I see.  Okay.  Thanks for the recommendation, but doesn't your DAC/AMP combo much higher grade than Modi + Magni?

It is a start and with 1watt output it could work out.

I had a listen to Dan's rig in Tokyo last weekend and I was pretty surprised at how clear the treble was, despite it being bright.

Here are a couple of photos:

You could consider a Geek Pulse. I took a punt on it purely based on the hype. The makers do have a pretty good rep. It will output 3W and the people at RMAF have said that it pairs well with the Alpha Dogs/Alpha Primes. All second hand information though. I can't wait til I get my hands on both of them Prime and Geek Pulse to give it a try.

Going to a meet and auditioning a few different rigs would be preferable to taking a chance on gear IMO.

I just heard my Alpha Dog compared to the Alpha Prime that Dan had on the table. Surprisingly Dan also had the Norne Vanquish cable attached to the Alpha Prime so I can provide the most accurate information to everyone here.

Given these two headphones were cabled with the same exact cable, they did not sound the same.

This provided me with the most accurate listening test I could objectively prepare and both were tested at the same volumes, I just paused the track and unplugged the cable and went back and forth between both.

Well guess what, DAN DID IT! I admit I was a skeptic at first and thought that my Norne Vanquish cable was going to trump the Alpha Prime. Well guess what, Dan had the same cable hooked up to the Alpha Prime AND IT SOUNDED EVEN BETTER. By God how did he extract even more details out of the T50RP driver??

Here are the noticeable improvements I could definitely hear over the Alpha Dog:

Background noise became more apparent on tracks that I didn't know had such background noise and there were even more subtle details I heard with that.

I thought at first I was playing the music at a higher volume but then I noticed the soundstage got even (larger)deeper and more cohesive than before.

Bass thumped a LITTLE bit harder than the Alpha Dog as far as I could tell from listening to the intro track "Speak to Me" from Dark Side of the Moon.

OVERALL, the most important improvement I noticed was soundstage. Just when you thought the Alpha Dog sounded open, well think again the Prime took it to a whole other level and put me in disbelief. These are the Stax-009 closed with better bass. I heard the Stax-009 with the Blue Hawaii amp at the same meet so I know full well what I am talking about :) Imaging is A+++

I heard the Stax-009 last year. You can not find a headphone with greater resolving power than the Stax. However the Alpha's bass in my words is wider fuller more musical than the Stax. Another comment I can say about the imaging of the Alpha's is when I listened to Bach: B minor Mass and when the great chorus stops singing the decaying reverberation field in the church before it fades into the background is as real as it can get from any other headphone I heard before....

Here is a video of  Dan Clark that was created for a 3D printing conference about making of the Alpha cups showing the actual printers setup that Dan uses.  This was done a few months ago. I have no idea on how many people already have seen this since I was not looking for it until now.
