If you're not familiar with what that number means, its basically saying that with them on your head, the outside will be 23 decibels quieter than whatever it is. so like if theres something making 60dB of noise in your room (which is relatively noisey), then with these on that will sound like 37dB of noise, which is very quiet. to put this into perspective most over ear protection for noise cancellation like for gun ranges or loud concerts or for drumming usually have an isolation of -30dB, some a bit more, but at least that much. so the AD/AP are definitely well isolating. Compare this to an LCD-2 which has essentially -1dB of isolation if that, and it means any noise playing around you will be heard as if you didnt have the headphones on at all.

hope this helps :)

The Alpha Dogs appear to be the best passive isolating over-ear headphones per Innerfidelity. Does anyone know of an audiophile headphone that can beat the AD's measured -23dB (100Hz to 10kHz) broadband isolation other than supposedly the AP?

not at this price point/performance level. At least not out the few current closed back reference level headphones. The other ones being the fostex th-900, and audeze lcd-xc, and if you want we can include the old denon line of d2000/5000/7000. anything else would be much more niche. I have the denons, they might as well be semi-open based on how much leak, and how little isolation is achieved. they are more like muffled open headphones. the xc I dont have experience with but I've read some people say it leaks a lot, and has like -12 db isolation. So similar to denon/fostex. the AD/AP nearly double that. and have the better soundstage even. its like taking two positive traits that usually dont ever work together, and making it work.

I recently had the TH900 and LCD-XC side-by-side.

I agree about the TH900, it's basically leaking wide open like my trusty DT880. You can hear everything.

The LCD-XC that I tried isolated like an average closed headphone. It would be comparable to say the ubiquitous Audio Technica M50 or Sennheiser 280Pro that everyone must have tried at some point. Definitely not a non-isolating headphone like the Fostex TH900 that's for sure!

Slight touch of sibilance on some stuff, and slight distant sounding on some stuff, but overall better than anything else I've ever heard lol. Curious what was the difference for you with the burn in. like what did they sound prior, and then after?

I'm a little out of my depth here, as I have not experienced what I am with the Primes before.  On some material, they didn't sound very good at all.  Mostly old 70's recordings mastered for CD in the 80's.  Compressed is a word that comes to mind.  If anything, they sound bigger, richer, and more lifelike with just about everything.  Crap recordings are still crap, and they don't add to the sound like the 400i's did.  But the Alpha's never 'warmed up' so to speak.

The soundstage seems wider, imaging more precise.  It's pretty good.

I lost both of my parents (and my 8yr old English Mastiff Gus - avatar is him as a pup) in the last year - hang in there - find peace, and I hope you find comfort in your trip to Ohio.  My heart goes out to you

I'm adding to my Prime experience thus far and can now attest to the perceived change having surpassed the 10 hour listening threshold. The effect commenced gradually and took deeper root as each hour ticked away. It is no exaggeration on Dan's part concerning the transformation of sound enabled by sufficient electron flow! I suspect the yet to be released tuning guide may even help bridge our understanding without divulging IP applied to the driver. Academically, it should be of great interest to all Prime owners and prospects as a handy user reference toward customizing Prime's signature if desired.

Alpha Prime continues to impress. For me, this can is different from the one that showed up last Saturday!

I suspect then, I will listen upon receipt, and then set them playing while I'm at work the next day.

Wait so what is the coupon for 10% off + free shipping for overseas?

The coupons are shown on Mrspeakers main web page and and I ran a test and it seems to work. Just 6 red Primes in stock. Backorders seems to be allowed. May take 2 weeks?
