I've been searching for that very cable but no one seems to be selling - including Trevor. The DHC stuff looks nice but is prohibitively expensive. Think I'll probably buy a silver cable of some description, either from Moon Audio or Toxic Cables. I'd like to buy from Charleston Cable Company but I think his cables are all copper.
I have one but you will need conversion adapters from Trevor, Pm if interested

Moon Audio is a safe bet. I've been pretty impressed with the Dragon Cables, and Drew is a cool guy to work with.

I still own Blue Dragon which I can't use it with Dogs without conversion adapters but when used with HD800 and HE-560 this is the last cable I would use from the 4 I currently own

Sigh.... Any chance of heading away from cable-fi and back to Alpha Prime-fi?

EDIT - Wow, very lame 3,000th post.....

I dug into the Alpha Prime and AK100 II a bit further.

Dan told me the AK100 II might not be enough to drive the Alpha Prime, and I believe he is correct when using the balanced connection.

For the unbalanced 3.5mm jack the output of the AK100 II, AK120 and AK240 are almost the same.

From AK Site:

AK100 II Output Level:  Unbalance 2.0Vrms / Balance 1.7Vrms (Condition No Load)

AK120 II Output Level: Unbalance 2.1Vrms / Balance 2.3Vrms (Condition No Load)

AK240   Output Level: Unbalance 2.1Vrms / Balance 2.3Vrms (Condition No Load)

I have the AK100 II and must say it drives it very well with the 3.5mm cable.

The Centrance M8 adds the very low base (to my impression), you can hear every vibration of a string bass on the Alpha Prime, heck, even the vibrations of the bass drum you can pick-up. Very tight, very fast bass of a very pure nature. I feel like the Centrance sometimes adds a bit to much base. It can be 'very' present (also in Centrance as PC/USB DAC).

And of course, the Centrance M8 is far from its max output to drive the headset, the AK 100 II does not have it that easy I think.

On a side note: The Alpha Prime is also a "wauw" gaming headset. Battlefield 4 is quite something!!

I' ve been using the Prime in the at home for music, for gaming, on the go with my AK 100 II and in the office on AK 100 II and AK 100 II + Centrance. Lucky me that my IT colleagues find this cool and not "abnormal"! Although the team leader asked me if I could get the airport control tower on it as well!?

(no comments yet on my review .... or it is not very good, or people don't comment much)

We shipped the last pre-ordered black tonight.  Black Primes will be in stock by early next week.  We expect to be shipping Claret with a 3-4 day lead time on Claret first week of December.  Other than two International orders that missed shipment today we're now up to November 13 on Claret.

Casper- I notice that the most powerful amp you have is the Centrance.  I realize it is a premium product.  But it would be really interesting to get you reaction to an amp that can output more than 1 watt into the Primes.

I could be totally wrong about this, and I am a fan of using the right amount of power without overkill.  But I suspect the 1 watt rating of the Centrance is for a 16-Ohm load.

My reasoning for using amps with strong output is not just play music loud but for the peak transit power response. For example, piano music is hard to record properly since the piano music can easily overload on the equipment somewhere in the recording chain.  Even microphones themselves can reach their limits on strong peaks with the piano playing. Providing you have a good piano recording the amp has to have good reserve power otherwise it will clip on the peaks or sometimes the peaks will become soft on piano music.

Ignore my post, I should have checked the site first lol, I was that last black pre-order haha. Anyways thanks for being awesome, and shipping so quickly! :)

Hi Dan, so I ordered a black prime on the 19th, does this imply by your message here that it will be shipping sometime next week? or do you just mean they will be in stock next week, and then have a few days lead time after that before they ship? Just curious since I realize you have just gotten through the pre-order stuff, so I wasn't sure the time frame for newer orders like mine.

Thanks in advanced! :)

Okay.

My Primes are here, and I've had about an hour with them.  More than the Alpha Dogs, I have conflicting thoughts.  First- the biggest disappointment: they do not make my usual rock listening better than the other headphones I have.  In fact, Black Sabbath sounds pretty darn bad on the Primes (shocking, I know ).  Second, the biggest amazing reaction: well-recorded material, such as Porcupine Tree, Cowboy Junkies, and the King Crimson re-masters are stunning.

Also, vocals aren't nearly as recessed as I was afraid they would be after reading some recent impressions.  Margo Timmins literally floats in the foreground, and the bass from Crescent Moon is the best I have heard to date.  The soundstage is a definite improvement over the Alpha Dogs, and is second only to the Grado GS1000e's.  Depth remains excellent, possibly even better than the Dogs.

The only thing really obvious to me is that some of my collection is Prime material, the rest is not.  Which is why I want a flagship-level headphone anyway.  For every Sabbath recording I have, there is an Alison Kraus or Steven Wilson waiting in the wings.

Anyway, I have a lot of critical listening to do, and a strange urge to get a DAC...

I'm looking forward to your further comments.  You seem to be honest with yourself from the outset, I fall into fanboy mode for the first week or so.  Being unkind to poor recordings wouldn't be the end of the world.  I have the PM-1's that are kind to everything, and a pair of midfi-ish closed headphones that seem pretty kind to everything as well.  Showing the full measure of well recorded material is a bonus.  The AD's did that for me, and were really not all that kind to poor source material.

Yep, they're ruthless with bad recordings. I think they're really accurate headphones, but that isn't always a good thing. The AP will probably render a lot of my music unlistenable. I wasn't expecting that. The flipside is that they make well recorded music sound incredible and as long as that criteria is met they're also great genre masters. I think we're in high-end territory with these.
