SMSL Sanskrit 24bit 192kHz USB DAC

I had a chance to try the Sanskrit 6th with the SMSL P1 linear power supply, expecting some improvement. It sounded definitely worse. After the sound test I find out the the amperage of the original wall wart is 1,3A while the P1 outputs only 0,6A.
Have anybody tried the Sanskrit with some more powerful LPS?

I did, and it sounds noticeably better with a ~6A psu.
What is strange is that the P1 is intended for many smsl dacs including the Sanskrit.
Any chance the psu itself might be defective? It also seems hard to believe that the Sanskrit needs more than the rate output power of the P1.

Thanks. Yes, I was wondering too that they advertise P1 for "M8 V2 VA2 Sanskrit SD-793II SD-192 etc". I have connected an SMSL streamer X3 which sounded worse then Sanskrit on the stack wall wart, but once connected to the P1, it blew away the Sanskrit. Improved soundstage and deeper and richer bass. So I guess, the P1 is not defective.

Hello, did you make further tests?

Yes, funny...After I disconnected Sanskrit, connected some other gear to test them with P1, and went back one more time with Sanskrit, all of the sudden it started working properly. I don't know what happened first time when weak signal was coming out. Now all works well. The sound difference isn't day and night, but still it adds some air on the top, or better said it removes the veil which you can hear with the stack switching PS.
The set doesn't look nice, they have completely different measures, and P1 gets quite hot, so keep them side by side.

Thank you a lot!
I am about to buy a SMSL lps (the one from the 'panda' set) but I was worried about your observations.
Just curious, did you buy the p1 specifically for the Sanskrit? If so, why not choosing the LPs over the p1? You would have matching size and shape.

About heat: you might know the videos by "ZeosPantera", he reviewed the smsl panda stack. For reasons depending on the weight of the components, he suggested to stack the psu on top. This might also be good for the p1 (in case you buy a m8 dac, which matches the p1).

Cheers!

any chance you used the second power supply output (rated 5V/9V/12V, autosense I suppose) insted of the first (9V fixed) for the previous test?

Thank you!

That was my first thought after

. But no, the second power supply was connected all the time with the SMSL X3 streamer. By the way, X3 is fantastic unit for the price. There, the difference with LPS was quite big.
Still wondering what would I get from Sanskrit if I go with the more powerful PS. What were the audible differences with your 6A PSU?

I first tried that psu with a Peachtree dac-it and the difference is quite immediate to perceive.
That was the moment when I actually realized what does the expression 'tight bass' even means. Also, a lot more detail was discernible.
Same applied for the Sanskrit, minus the surprise, I suppose only because of what I was expecting already.
Of course I cannot make comparisons with other smsl branded psus...

  Hello,

Can someone please tell me iff there is any diference between the Sanskrit and the M6 in terms off DACS?

Sanskrit uses Wolfson's WM8740 and M6 has Asahi Kasei AK4390EF. Sanskrit is a pure DAC, M6 has also integrated headphone amp with digital volume control. Somewhat highish output impedance of 10 Ohms.

Hi, I was thinking of getting an M8 based on the positive reviews around, however I have someone willing to sell me a Sanskrit 6th for $70. Should I put the money with the Sanskrit or go for the M8? I am using this for whole house audio pushed through a Dayton APA 150.

I would get the Sanskrit and try it as long as it works fine.... If it doesn't end up being what you are looking for you can always get $70 back for it and then get the m8

Thanks for the reply. I think that would be my next problem, I'm not sure I know what I am looking for without knowing what I'd be missing from something else in and around the same price range.

Well, I can't say about the Sanskrit or the m8s sound, I own the m6. I'm just saying that if you like what you hear with the Sanskrit keep it and if you think it's not what you're looking for, sell it and get the m8... At 70 bucks you can't go wrong... The m8 is twice the price... Plus.
