I wouldn't say that Head-Fi is the only place to have community status. Lots of game specific forums are like this as well.

Most of all Head-Fi is a place where people of like minds can meet and discuss (in peace, thanks moderators!) not only headphones but a variety of other topics. And that is really what it's all about--yeah, sure, everyone comes here at first to gain knowledge about headphones and other audio equipment but they stay because they can interact with like-minded people and be encouraged through them to try new things; related to audio or otherwise. Essentially what makes head-fi great is the process known in behavioral psychology as modeling--watching someone else do something and then immitating them because it appears that the observed person is getting rewarded for performing the action. Without head-fi I never would have though about spending so much time and money toward building a headphone rig because I never would have known (or believed) that the results could be so fruitful. But watching and interacting with people who have done such things has made me a believer and this is what has encouraged me to make my rig the best it can be.
The mind-blowing thing to ponder, though, is imagine if forums such as head-fi existed all over the internet, about every topic under the sun, what a wonderful world that would be.
