Sony's New 2014 flagship IEM - XBA Z5 - Page 31

Most stores in Canada will not allow headphone returns anymore for sanitary reasons they say (Sony is an exception at the moment). I have suggested more audition pairs to stores to help reduce returns but they won't do it. I think it's crazy that Sony would rather have brand new product returned versus having one pair being used to allow people to see if they want the IEM or not.

Actually here in China you can try basically everything.. Z5 and PH3 included. So it's probably an issue with sanitary regulations..

In india I cannot try any iem, only headphones.

Forget about z5,the best iem to be released here is A1,meanwhile sen ie800,shure 535,grado gr10 etc are available easily.

Hi, just registered to give my two cents about XBA-Z5.

I picked up mine while vising Japan few weeks back, pair number 310 according to the metal plate inside the box. So far I've used them with Sony Walkman NW-ZX1 and NuForce Icon HDP connected to PC. First listening was confusing the hell out of my ears, these things are anything but neutral. After a day or so I got over the weirdness factor and started to take in the sound for what it is. Clarity is great across the whole range, everything is nicely separated and minor details clearly distinguishable. Lows are heavily weighted but well controlled and highs pleasantly soft, never entering the skull piercing territory, but not lacking either.

Even though I personally love these things, it's hard to outright recommend them at such price and personal sound. Do test if possible, preferably on multiple occasions, as the initial impression can be clouded by the rather unique weighting.

Thanks for your impressions. The Z5 is a really interesting flagship. Seems like it's hard to shake the big bass tag.

Anyway, where did you buy them in Japan? I'll be heading to Tokyo in early January, and I'm looking to audition them at either Yodobashi or at E-earphone in Akihabara.

I'll have the Centrance Hi-Fi M8 this week.  Hopefully PHA-3 shortly after.   Would be interesting to hear the two.  :)

From Yodobashi Umeda in Osaka. Yodobashi usually has major models out for testing, not so for Z5. It didn't even have a price tag on the shelf. That might be just because Z5 is so new, hopefully it's available for testing when you are there.

Thanks!

Yeah, I believe they should be available for auditioning by the time January comes around. Yodobashi is indeed something of a paradise for ear/headphones. I'll just be sure to bring along some tissues this time. wink.gif

Actually it is already available for testing at Yodobashi! :) You will find it in a transparent case in almost any Yodobashi branch. Just ask some of the staff and you can audition it!

After listening to it myself, I actually disagree with most of the negative statements here.

It`s true it does not sound as "bright" or "crisp" as, for example, the EX1000, but in my opinion there is no lack of detail at all! It´s just a different tuning. I found it to be a similar direction as some of the other new top tiers, such as the Roxanne or Shure 864: they also do not sound overly bright to my ears. What I can tell for sure is, that the Z5 sounded very energetic and rhythmic. I really liked them! And I could hear quite of a quality difference compared to the A3.

Is this bigger than the H3? These sony iems releases are getting bigger and bulkier, don't want to get bigger ear canals smily_headphones1.gif

That's good news. Looking forward to some auditioning time with the Z5s and the A3s soon. :)

Anyway, how much of a difference can be discerned between the Z5 and the A3 (just sound quality wise)?

They look about the same in size -

I just wish Sony could find a way to make these less elongated. They look too much like USB thumb drives stuck in your ears when using them.

I remember hearing that they were smaller, be it from the forums or Sony themselves I've forgotten.

But, here's a picture for you

There's a comparison to the H3 in Hifiguy's Z5 unboxing video. It looks a bit smaller.
