A little about the Shozy Alien - Page 19

I personally find myself more focussed on choosing an album by sound (I.e. If it catches my attention and emotions on the day) than by brain (thinking about who I think I want to listen to) when using a screenless player.

That and it's actually easier to skip whole albums with Alien. With the X5 (for example) I have to take it out of my pocket, press buttons to get to the menu, scroll through options and choose what I think I want. With the Alien I just reach into my pocket and hold down one button - nice and easy!

Another thing not mentioned is the size added by a screen, even a small one. There's no way the Alien could be so small, thin and light if it had a screen.

Your response is more useless rant than anything I had to say. If you have nothing to say, then why bother posting? I'm responding to the ludicrous suggestion that having a screen somehow lessens the value of music, lessens attention span, or 'not' having a screen makes one appreciate music more. It's ludicrous for anyone to use this as a selling point for this unit design. That's it. I came to look at this thing, asked questions, and I understand the 'no screen equals better sound' argument (though I don't really believe it yet) but that is where the ADVANTAGE of 'no screen' ends.

The Shozy Alien is ROUGHLY on the same level as AK240, DX90(+amp), X5(+amp), ... in the SQ department, but it costs $200 while all the other options are $1000+.

It comes back to what one of the other posters already said at the beginning of this thread: priorities. If you are willing to make some sacrifices (no screen, no MP3, no built in memory) this can be a great buy.

The advantage of not adding a screen to a DAP is just COSTS plain and simple:

and it's not just parts(they are usually extremely cheap) the electric circuit gets a lot more complicated; they have to develop and maintain a functional OS, ... it also uses up quite a bit of space hence why all the other good sounding units look a lot like a brick

I have to agree with you, saying that having no screen is an advantage because you appreciate the music more would be a lousy selling point.

Yeah, I don't think it's a selling point so much as a side-effect for some of us. For me it has definitely returned my focus to a 1-album-at-a-time approach rather than shuffling everything.

I agree with the rest of your post, but I'm not sure about this part.

Yes, it should be at least on the same level as the X5, if not surpassing it, but I'm not sure if it can outperform it stacked with a decent amp or the DX90 with a decent amp.  It should best them without amps though.

I'm not sure if we have any comparisons with the AK240 however, and I'm PRETTY sure that it isn't on the same level as the AK240.

Alien - sleek Wav/Flac player with a solid high grade CNC aluminium housing and navigation of great simplicity.

''Small size, entry price, big sound''

No OS, no fancy UI, no memory in-built also no card reading circuit, all you can get is the best replay quality for the price, meticulously tuned for best performance with modern in ear earphones or small headphone.

Their description seems to be as minimalistic as their player.

I've also ordered one, because for <$200 I can forgive a lot of shortcomings, except for SQ of course.

CAN'T WAIT

Alien + Harmony 8 (pro) seems like the ultimate ultra portable set up, at least imo (size, weight, SQ, price, isolation). Hell, I pretty much just signed up to read whoever's notes as soon as possible. All eyes on you buddy.

I agree completely. What I was trying to say was that this Alien plays in the performance area (SQ of low imp IEMs) of much more expensive units. And from what I have read you have to spend a lot more money to beat it's sound. (+ sacrifice mobility)

I also have to apologize, I accidentally mixed up AK120 and AK240, because I was referring to this (also the source is questionable?)

I prefer having a screen but there isn't a doubt in my mind that not having one will lower the noise floor and distortion. Everything is trade offs. Pick your poison or state a reasonable opinion and move on. No reason to bash or continue posting negatively even more unless there's something factually incorrect to address or you may have some unique insight. I've always loved vinyl but have been known to skip tracks I don't care for. I finger cue like a champ so I'm happy for the skip function.

That makes much more sense.  >.<

I prefer a screen myself, but I must admit, I am a bit curious. Then again, I want an X5,DX90, DX100, Calyx M, Cayin C6 (or is it N6?), and Cowon Plenue P1. I just love electronics!!
