I have this same question.

I upgraded from Explorer to Explorer2 a year ago (in anticipation of MQA streaming).

Cannot comment on Dragonfly Red, but I was pleased with the SQ improvements from Meridian's apodizing filters (even though I don't really understand the concept of "pre-ringing").  MQA is another step up in SQ.

I use the Explorer2 in my desktop/stereo rig.  The Dragonfly's ability to run from a mobile iDevice USB is a big advantage.

The Mytek Clef looks like a great mobile solution.

Is the explorer 2 a dac or amp/dac?

My only resistance to the Explorer 2 is the limited Sample rate of 192kHz, but not sure if there are any higher Sample rate Masters on Tidal. Anyone know?

Can someone please explain to an ignorant person what sort of playback system I would need to take advantage Tidal? Thanks!

This is not a simple answer but I will try with several options.

Tidal's main advantage is Lossless streaming of a very large library at your command on many devices is its biggest selling point.

To take best advantage from

1. A phone   Smart phone with Tidal app installed. A DAC such as Chord Mojo then out from there to your headphones although a Dac is not required.

2. A DAP such as most of the AK devices.

3. Computer (preferred for me). Tidal software output to a DAC and onto an amp of your choosing.

4. Streaming Device such as Sonos, Chromecast. For casual listening in the background.

Option 3 via computer will allow you to listen to the ever growing 'Master' section whereby you get to stream the MQA version which, depending of course on the original recording, can be surprisingly good.

MQA, besides being the most recent buzzword is also Tidal's primary offering.

One last tip... If you know a family member who is a University Student, you can get Tidal HIFI at 1/2 price - I'm not suggesting that you 'Cheat' the system but lets calling it playing smart....

Hope this helps some.

Okay. That makes more sense now. Multiple devices is very cool to me. Thank you very much. I will get it rolling...

FYI...Tidal has a Family Plan, too.

going to help the tenants enjoy some lossless music on me.

https://support.tidal.com/hc/en-us/articles/203815152-Does-TIDAL-offer-a-family-plan-

Hello

Thank you for contacting TIDAL Member Support.

Your settings are correct to stream HiFi/Masters.

It sounds like your connection to your speakers is also good, so you should be able to enjoy our Masters and HiFi.

In regards to your tenants, we offer a Family subscription, you would have to provide your payment information for each account, but there is a 50% discount.

Does TIDAL offer a family plan?

excerpt:

OK – how do I get going with MQA on Tidal?

Firstly, you need a Tidal Hifi account – the US$20/month one. Once that’s running, click to Settings → Streaming and check ‘Hifi / Master’. This will ensure Tidal streams MQA content to all your desktop apps and that Tidal’s desktop app will carry out the first unfold.

I’ll be getting a Meridian Explorer2 soon I think. What happens then? I mean, how do I tell the Tidal app that my DAC will be doing all the unfolding from thereon in?

Go back to Settings, select your (Meridian) DAC’s settings (click the wheel) and ensure that the three checkboxes – Exclusive Mode, Force Volume, MQA Passthrough – are all checked.

***one nugget i picked up from the article was in the Tidal MQA settings:

i didn't have all 3 boxes checked off.***

Flippin' sad that Tidal's own instructions (let alone explanation of this technology) are pretty lame by comparison

Force volume too? Won't be getting MQA on my Dragonfly Black then. No volume controls on that thing. Hmm.
