Need help choosing between mid-level over-ear headphones

Hey, I'm relatively new to the intensive subject of headphones, and I'm trying to decide between the Sennheiser HD598 and the Beyerdynamic DT880s. I've heard that the 880s have better base but a lower soundstage and can be painful in the high frequencies, but the 598s are about 100 dollars cheaper. I'm also completely uneducated in the subject of amplifiers, DACs and sound cards, I currently use the pre-included motherboard soundcard for my desktop but I'm open to investing in a decent soundcard. My preferred price range would be not over $500, but I'm able to compensate if it's over.

The kind of audio I'm listening to is mainly electronic and instrumental, but I also listen to a bit of hip hop and rock, so whichever is more well-balanced would probably be preferable. I'll be dabbling in audio production with them a bit, I'm not sure at all which is better for that but that's one of my main concerns.

Basically, with my price range, would the DT880s or the HD598s be a better investment, and which soundcards/amplifiers/DACs should I also invest in?

Thanks for replying!

From your description, it appears that you have only on board audio and not a sound card.  Please check and if you have a sound card, provide as many details about it as you can.

The versions of the DT 880 worth considering are at least 250 Ohms and require an amp to sound the way they should.

If you have only on-board audio, you will need to upgrade to a decent sound card and/or external DAC--preferably with an amp built in.  If not, you will not get your moneys worth with the cans you are considering.  Both are too good to be fed by a crappy up-line.

Yea I have onboard audio, when I built the PC I didn't feel the need at the time to buy one.

What sound card would you recommend? I'm planning on pairing it with an amplifier/external DAC, though I'm not sure which. What would you recommend?

I don't do my serious music listening by way of computer, so I'm not the one to ask.  However, there is an entire sub-section of this forum devoted to Computer Audio.

You won't need a soundcard if you get an external USB DAC, as the USB interface skips over any audio processing done on your computer. The ODAC and O2 are a well loved combo and should be within budget, or the Schiit Modi and another amp of theirs... also the Audio-GD NFB-11 or NFB-15. Those seem to be some of the most popular combos.
