Amp/DAC for ps3 and pc gaming

Hi guys,

been reading forum posts everywhere over the last week or so deciding on headphones to get. I am in the lounge room in my house so have decided to go for a pair of closed headphones in the ATH-A700x. I will be using these mostly for gaming on pc and ps3 but also a bit of music too.

My next issue is, what amp or DAC should I be looking at to allow me to use these headphones on both ps3 and pc? I guess it needs optical input for the ps3? I was initially considering the astro mixamp pro 2013 as it does the voice side of things as well, but not sure what the quality is like? Is it worth the $130? Or should I look at something else around that price range? Or cheaper would be nice =) haha.

Thanks in advance for any advice =).

Not sure about console gaming but the A700X doesn't need much in the way of amplification.  A Schiit Magni + Modi, or Objective2 amp + ODAC combo is more than enough.  The Little Dot 1+ is another popular budget amp worth looking into.

Hmm, A little over my budget I think. I'll probably just go with the mixamp for ps3 and maybe a sound card for my pc =) like the asus xonar DG.

Sound card for PC is a very viable option.  I don't know anything about the mixamp, but the A700X is very easy to drive so it should be fine.

The Astro mix-amp is really about your only option for headphone surround sounding with a Sony PS3.

Asus Xonar DG is a good low cost (Dolby Headphone) sound card for the Win PC.
