Soundcard! Creative SB Z Vs ZxR ! And new Headphones in a near future? Dt880?

Hello!  I got a little problem here. I'am having a very hard time deciding wich soundcard i shall buy. Its between Creative Sound blaster Z and the more expensive model ZxR.. I Got Sennheiser pc 360 atm. But looking to buy a DT 880 600ohm in a near future. Or any other headphones in that price class that is very good for allround use.. Meaning Competetive gaming music and movies ofc.

I can go up in price if that is needed for better headphones.. I want a nice upgrade from the Pc 360.

So if there is any expert in here that can help me i would be very happy.

I have searched all over the web but can't really get all my answers answered.

dt880 might not be that great for competitive gaming. I'd rather recommend something like q701, k712pro as good all rounders..

ZXR have superior amp/dac, comparing with Z/ZX.

btw what is your budget ?

then I d recommend 712pro.. ZXR should also pair well with 712pro. if you can get STX cheaper, it is also a great performer. but you might have to rely on uni-xonar drivers. so ZXR could be the safer choice.

Edit, The DT 880 got 600 OHM and the AKG k712 got 62 OHM. How can the difference be so big? Or is OHM just some numbers ?

712pro is easier to drive while 600ohm 880 takes lots of power to drive properly [higher the resistance(ohm), harder to drive] . 880 600ohm version has less clamping force comparing to 250ohm version. that's the main difference between 250ohm and 600ohm versions..

Depending on your country, i would NEVER get an K712 Pro, if you dont compared them yourself with a Beyerdynamic T90.

The K712 are kinda at the same "level" of a K701, which is MUCH cheaper (the K712 just have more bass, and sligihtly less clarity/soundstage from what i've heared. Thats why in my opinion, the K712 isnt a good choice at all, since its just a different K701 at a much higher pricepoint.). A similar priced T90 should perform at a higher level - If you dont dislike the Sounding. Also, the Soundstage on the T90 is pretty great.

Pure competetive is also WORSE than a 150 dollar cheaper K701. Only think the K712 makes better, is its more bassy, and more fun when something explodes etc.

Soundcard.. I would chose neither of those. Get something between those: Asus Phoebus. Much cheaper than a ZxR, and just a nuance worse DAC (but the SAME Amplifier, so almost no difference i soundquality).

The ZxR is too overpriced. At least here in germany its 230€. The Essence STX is at 157€, the Phoebus SOLO at 113€ (the ZxR is 100% NOT worth THIS higher price compared to a phoebus)

I currently use Creative ZX along with Beyer dt990pro and the sound is amazing compared to my previous on-board with a having headset. The Zx is great cause I can also plug my speakers and switch using the software.

I mostly play racing games and listen to music do if you are into competitive fps you might want to look into the akgs as they offer better positional cues.

I think my next step is a schiit magni to better power by Beyers although they are already plenty loud through the card.

I have Phoebus and I must say Phoebus one of the most overpriced hardware with below average performance. STX is a great option if you are willing you use uni-xonar drivers.

for just gaming I d recommend q701,k701, hd598,ma900 but I don't think there is any better all-rounder to k712pro in this price range.

Im from sweden. So everything is pretty expensive here. So in other words you recommend the K701 instead of k712 pro? And the t90?  The price difference  between k701 and T90 is huge.

Is the T90 ALOT better than the K701?

I did look on the PHOEBUS. But its hard to decide wich one to buy. What about the Z model? Its alot cheaper than the zxr.

Yupp, it would be nice to have both speakers and headphone plugged in at the same time.

I play racing games too.

I recommend the Audio Technica ATH-AD900X.  The forward mids is good for competitive gaming, and it should have enough bass to make games all enjoyable (once burnt in at least).

As for a sound card, the ZxR is probably overkill for these.  Unless you go a step ahead and get the AD1000X, which isn't needed for gaming but it will be better for music.  I don't recommend an ASUS sound card for you, the Creative ones will be better for gaming due to better surround options (namely SBX Pro Studio).  The ZxR has a much better DAC among other components so it will provide better sound quality than the Z and Zx.  Pure sound quality will be more or less equal to the ASUS Xonar Essence cards.

So AD900X + Sound Blaster Z is great for competitive gaming, though if you want something that makes music more enjoyable as well, go for the AD1000X + Sound Blaster ZxR.

since some people are confusing you with some conflicting impressions, I d like to direct you to MLE's gaming thread, since he already reviewed both k701,712pro and many
