I haven't tried the 598s yet, but I love my Momentums. They're very well-rounded genre-wise and pretty balanced from bottom to top, and they're great for taking around too. If you're going to take them on planes, etc. I'd have to recommend them because they're very lightweight, super comfortable, and they keep your music in and outside sounds out pretty well for not being actively noise-cancelling.
That said, if you're mostly using your cans at home and don't care whether they're open- or closed-backed, you should probably get some better feedback/comparisons in direct sound quality between the two.
First things first; the 598 is open and made for at home use, but the Momentum is closed and primary directed to the portable market.
The 598 are neutral to neutral-ish and because they are open, they offer a larger sound stage. The Momentum are warm to slightly bass oriented.
The 598 will work without an amp, but are better with one. The Momentum is designed for use with lower powered portable devices.
how is the soundstage of the momentums? Because im a college student and walking around campus with 598s on my head will look kinda crazy hahah but its all about the sound and comfort to me. Also, what about the on ear momentums? are those comfortable or no?
Open cans leak sound and don't isolate well, so any can like the 598 will probably not work for you.
I recall the sound stage of the Momentum to be OK to OK+ for closed cans. You will not match the sound stage of quality open cans with closed cans (especially in the same price range).
Headphone comfort is a very individual thing. Everyone has a different head size and shape, as well as different sensitivities and levels of sensitivity. We can point you to headphones that are generally considered to be comfortable and mention others that have garnered complaints for being uncomfortable. However, the only way to know for sure is to wear them yourself for a time equivalent to your longest listening session. That said, most seem to find the over ear Momentum more comfortable than the on ear version.
Here's more about the Momentums from an excellent reviewer who likes them better than I do:
No--it's a colored headphone. While it certainly not in basshead territory, it emphasizes bass and deemphasizes treble. It's not as clear and open as other choices. That's not to say it's bad, but it certianly is not my cup of tea. I like the sound from the HD 598, the Amperior and HD 25-1 II much better.
if thats the only two crazybargains u have...i would go for the momentum.
u gonna enjoy it walking around campus..in the library...v easy to power..off your fone or laptop.. looks classy...high quality...
and reasonably GOOD sound. It is quite clear actually, nothing sloppy or diffused.
( betw the on ear..n over ear...i prefer the over ear )

After using them all day, i did notice some very very very minor distortion. ( nothing to cry about, it was probably just the production of the song, or the vocals since the vocalist was screaming hahah) but after all day use. They're better than i thought. Not too much bass but just right. Hits both highs and lows. the soundstage is superb. Worth the money
