You do not have to remove the black rubber tape right away.

The black rubber tape block about 40% of the air holes, I can only assume it's to make sure the HD558 does not sound as good (or almost as good) as the HD598.

I think it's better to buy used HD558s off Amazon and just remove the tape.

Best way to remove the ear pads is to use all 4 fingers, on the inside of the cup, to pull off the ear pad, allowing access for removing the black rubber tape.

is the sound difference noticeable?

I tried the foam mod and didn't like it. The sound became too diffuse and lost impact. The bass became less controlled. I think the headphone sounds best stock. The foam tape gives it a semi-open quality.

It wasn't hard, and yes I undid it. Putting the foam back the way it was originally was tricky, so I used a flashlight to shine through the inner cup while looking at the outer cloth and S logo to check alignment. I have OCD.

Yea me to this is why I don't want to do it :/

Also does this void the warranty

I don't know.  I don't think it should, unless you damage something when trying to remove the foam tape, such as a driver or wires.  Sennheiser is aware of the mod.  If I were you I would contact them and ask.

Just take pictures before you take it out. If you look at the article here that discusses the mods, you can see it wouldn't be that hard to put it back in the same place:

http://www.headfonia.com/sennheisers-new-hd558-and-hd598/3/

You could even take pictures with a ruler in place so that you have measurements to realign it. Although I think counting the hexagons would work well, too.

I guess technically it does void the warranty, but Sennheiser might not be that picky as I'm assuming they want good customer relations.

This is why I recommend buying used HD558s off Amazon, I believe Amazon allows 30 days to return the headphones and I'm assuming they do not bother checking it see if the black rubber tape is removed.
