Nordost is a major cable company. Their flagship cable the $3300 USD per meter pair Valhalla is one of the most respected cables of pro reviewers and the wealthy.

The SPM & Red Dawn are much less expensive.

It should be noted Nordost cables aren't silver. They're silver-plated. The sound, IME, is dissimiliar to silver cables (or copper cables for that matter). It probably has as much to do with cable geometry/design as it does material.

Let's see at the specs of Signal Cable...

Quote:
Nom. Capacitance - 18.9 pF/ft
Nom. Conductor DC Resistance - 20.3 Ω/1000 ft
Nom. Inductance - 0.12 µH/ft
If capacitance values are of utmost importance, I'd take a look at
Klotz Professional Microphone cables (MY206)

Capacitance - 18.3 pF/ft (60 pF/m)
Resistance - 25.9 Ω/1000 ft (85 Ω/km)
Price - EUR 1.30/m

They also have a sturdier MC2000 cable that is electrically identical but allows for more abuse, and MC5000 which has wider conductors (and greater capacitance) and double shielding, for studio use.

Another low-capacitance cable is Bryston XLR cable:

Capacitance - 12.5 pF/ft (between conductors (??))
Resistance - 50 Ω/1000 ft
Price - $150 / 1m pair

Silver Serpent balanced XLR from bettercables.com is 15 pF/ft and $70 per one 1m cable or $140 / 1m pair.

MTR audio ATM microphone cables are 24 pF/ft (80pF/m) and £95/100m (which makes for $1.72 USD for one meter)

Now if I only could calculate, how much the capacitance ACTUALLY matters and whether it affects music AT ALL, would I be very happy...

In all, there does seem to be some air in the prices of most expensive interconnects, if cables intended for professionals are so much cheaper...

Now I only wonder, what cables do the mastering studios actually use!

Sorry for the delay.
Did you ever post your impressions?

Do you all find that Signal responds to emails promptly? I inquired about their (his) turnaround time for a set (4 pairs) of ICs nearly a week ago. He never responded.

In your experience, how fast does he deliver an order?
I had about a 1 week wait for an answer from Frank, and the order shipped promptly following my placement for a power cord - I am in Canada, so it took a while to arrive, but within comfortable timeframes.

Frank is a good guy, but likely swamped with interest like this thread will generate!

That could be. I've had e-mails answered within 24 hours before the silver line. And orders sent out within a few days.

Maybe I'm off base here, but doesn't the use of digital(digital from source to receiver) factor out the need for an expensive "quality" cable?
I don't think that you are off base per se, but it really depends on a couple of things.

1. Is the source a digital one? TT will still need high quality analogs for sure.
2. Does the receiver have good DAC in it? I don't use a receiver at all, I have an integrated Sugden amp, and many in many receivers, the quality of the DAC could be improved upon, if done externally.

Just my experiences, and thoughts,

Meech's take on the Signal Cable Silver

Quote:
Here's what I think of them:
First of all, physically they're a lot more flexible than the Signal Cable Analog IIs that I've been using. This was a blessing because the Analog IIs where a little annoying to manage in tight spots. The Silvers are so loose you can pretty much tie them in a knot.

Intially, I had a real problem with the sound of the Silvers. The highs were way too splashy and the bass was not as tight and the Analog IIs. What did impress me was how clean the mids and treble were. I finally figured out what people meant when they say 'Each instrument had it's own space'. I thought I'd experienced this when I first got my 650s but the Silvers take it to a whole 'nother level ! It was the cleanest presentation I've ever heard. It reminded me of the sound that I heard from Hirsch's HE60's.

I emailed Frank at Signal to tell him that I really like the Silvers but the Splashy highs were unbearable. It was literally the first time that I had ever considered my 650s to sound bright (which is damn near impossible). He suggested that I hold on to them a little longer and give the Silvers time to burn-in a little more. Well after another week of listening I can proudly say, I totally love these cables. The sound has smoothed out a lot but still provides all of the detail and seperation that blew me away from the start. The bass has also shaped up and I think the extension goes slightly lower than the Analog IIs.

No my friend, these cables are not going back. EVER!

I thought exactly the same thing as you as I would read a digital cable review and would be suprised that a "quality" digital cable made a difference. 0s & 1s !!?? But as the reviewer would begin with the same belief as you and I, I guess it's a logical assumption.

Meech's take on the Signal Cable Silver
I've been waiting anxiously for that!
Thanks Meech & pirate!
My next cable buy will be the Signal Silver.
