The sound produced by the HD558 is rich, a bit light, and isn't bloated with bass which is a good thing. It has a crisp treble and punchy bass, very great...
That being said, 96 in slow mode takes around 50% of my XP 2000+ (512MB RAM)'s CPU power.
Strange... it only takes 38-40% of mine, and I'm using an Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz, 256 megs RAM. Then again I'm using WaveOut on Win98SE, which is direct to the soundcard driver... basically bypasses Windows altogether.
If you're using any DSP plugins aside from the resampler, taking them out could speed things up...
