Went to a vintage audio store today and tried these through a Magnavox 8301-10 that was pulled from a console, he thinks it had like 3-5w. I don't know much about it, he said it's a good tweeter, high efficiency speaker or headphone amp. The bass output was insane. Does anyone know or have any experience with it? It was a single output transformer tube amp but also had a tube for the power and the input.

Apparently this is supposed to be an integrated amp, with no headphone outs. So if you found one with a head out then it's been modified (unsurprising for vintage audio gear?)

Yeah he added a 1/4 output, any idea how many watts it's pushing into 50 ohms? It seems well liked on audiokarma

Unfortunately all I know is that it pushes ~6-8W at a 4ohm load (from what I read in those threads). I don't think one can predict / calculate the power output for a different load without knowing more about the schematics (I wouldn't know even then :) ). However I doubt it'll be 5W / channel (assuming the 6-8W is correct for a 4ohm load), it should be more like 2ish W / channel, judging from what I've been seeing in other amps like Musical Paradise MP301, which pushes out ~6.5W for speakers, and ~1.1W for a 50ohm load according to Garry at Musical Paradise.

This is just speculation though, don't quote me on this. :)

HOWEVER, now that I have brought up the MP301, does anyone have experience with it being paired with the Blackwood? I remember seeing a post about it by someone on this thread saying he hoped his upcoming Blackwoods paired well with these. I'll dig up his name and quote him just to get his views. :D

Found you, @kpfeifle

What amps would that be?

The Woo Wa6SE OTC and the Musical Paradise MP-301 SET

How did the headphones pair with these amps?

Hello! First off, I have ordered a Vibro Mk II, not a Blackwood. Secondly, I have not received it yet, so I really can't say! I should be getting my shipping confirmation any day, so it should be soon. I also have a MAD Ear + HD to try it with as well. I will be happy to report on all 3 once I reiceve them.

Ah, I didn't realize you haven't gotten it yet. I think from what I've heard Vibro and Blackwood are not night-and-day apart, so impressions would be great. I'll look forward to you getting your headphones! :D

Also, you have some sweet amps (only judging from reviews though, haha). I was looking at all three of these (well, WA6 instead of the WA6SE), but most interested in the MP301 due to the lower price.

I will say this for the MP-301, I was very impressed with it! Purchased this really to just drive a pair of speakers, but of course I tried it with headphones. Does much better with new tubes, and if you go this route I'd be happy to tell you what I like!

Zach,

You may have a copy of this, but if not I recommend a copy of "Tube Substitution Handbook," by William Smith and Barry Buchanan. Trying the different tube substitutions will help you define the sound signature of the "ZMF Sonnare Tube Headphone AMP."
