This is the upgrade option of the stock cable:

The stock cable is thinner, and sleeved in black cloth.

Just made this picture of the stock cable...

Hope it answers your question :)

Btw, if somebody's looking for the Kimber upgrade cable that ButtUglyJeff posted above, I'm willing to sell mine (mint condition for €150). I'm in EU though...

Thanks Kero and Jeff. I see that it doesn't have the TRRS 3.5 plug for zx2 balanced mode :-/

Yes, that's correct.  Seems odd Sony would go in 2 different directions with balanced outputs....

Exactly ! I guess that cable will need to be customized, or I can just simply grab 1A instead as it uses 3.5 TRRS on both end for balanced mode.

So you use the stock balanced cable with the PONO? Is the Kimber not better?

I think the cable will fit physically but not sure if it will match signal-wise.

I actually use a custom one from Surf Cables with my Z7. I had the idea and John over at Surf put it together but a Pono balanced cable for Oppo's PM-3 works in reverse as a trrs cable for the Z7 (pinout is L+ R+ L- R-).

Don't know the exact pinout on the ZX2's trrs jack but you may want to read this post (and the next few after it):

What I really like about the Z5 is it's excellent lows (best I've ever heard in an iem) and very wide soundstage. I bought it so I could try it in balanced mode, but it appeared also very impressive single ended out of my X5/C5 and (especially) DX90/Hugo stack

I consider the Z7 single ended a very good hp, but it failed to really impress me. It has like the Z5 a bit of a dark signature, but single ended from my stacks or HA-501 amp, I just prefer my Grado PS500 over it...Now, this changes (big time) when I run it balanced from my Pono. The Z7 seems to scale up several levels and changes from a very good into an amazing sounding hp. Bass gets tighter and it gets a beautiful 3D sound...mids, highs, imaging and details also improve imo when you listen balanced with Z7

Btw, next week I'll receive a Sennheiser HD700 which I picked up in the classifieds 2 days ago...I'm curious how that one will compare to the Z7 and PS500 when I have it here :)

Is it the balanced config that makes it shine or is it the Pono itself you think? But thank you for the impressions! Listening to rock music, it seems that the treble is just perfect and I love how cohesive everything it is. I am trying to figure out how much I will have to spend to make the Z7 shine :)

The stock cable I have have black rubber/plastic material  as the sleeve, for both the balanced and the SE cable. Not that would matter much other than better flexibility for the rubber/plastic sleeve.

Both. The Z7 sounded pretty good already but balanced to the Pono improved them that much more.

I read a few places that people said the bass distorted.....is it true ?
