Hi !  i am kind of bass-head which prefer sound signature like Audio Technica ATH-WS77 and JVC M55X.  After purchased Aune T1 24bit usb dac, my taste shift to good sound staging. My aune T1 got stock electro harmonix 6922 EH and GE 6aq8 ecc85, Siemens e88cc(6922, cca) .  Still in doubt i love to get opened-back or wooden-back. but for long hour listening, i think opened back is kind of choice for me. and my budget is around usd 200-300 but willing to go up if sound staging is definitely make me WOWW.

Here is some of my looked and hope you guys give me some input or suggestion. Not in sequence of likeness. just a list.

ath ad/a 1000x (or 900x)
ath esw 11 ( or 9)
garado sr80e (or 60e)
akg 612 pro ( or k701)
Sennheiser HD650
Sony mdr ma 900
HE-500 (thats pretty huge can)

sorry for mass list and long post. looking forward your impression. xD

I use Senn HD 558 with my T1, the 650 or 600 would be my dream cans, the open back is great for long listening. But, and it's a big one, This is NOT a set up for a basshead. The bass is fine for a good natural sound but ultra bass, no. The HE 400 might be a good choice, possibly the Grados, but I would read the basshead boards to see if any of these or any open cans will really give you what you need. Good luck.

Philips x1 fits the bill

Hi ! guys.

Thanks for alots of input. I try alots of things at local store. AKG 701 got slow taste. Shure abit cramp with my ear and i feel heavy. Sennheiser give good impression but i just not used to his oval-shaped cup. Garado... well, is like on-ear to me. Whats left is Audio Technica since there is no HE-400, sony mdr ma900.

Hard battle between ATH AD-900x vs ATH AD-1000x. Me and my friends are like should i top up to get 1000x or budgeted 900x. After 10-15 mins listening to only those, i satisfy with 900x while my fried prefer 1000x. I think 1000x got better sound separation and more detail sound staging but i feel alittle slow and less engaging compare to 900x. just IMO.

Well, if there is a chance to test sony mdr ma900, my opinion will be different again.

Hope this input will help some people.

Thanks for suggestion. Phillips and SoundMagic are also good-to-try piece.

The AD900X and AD1000X are definitely not for bassheads.  I'm surprised you liked them!  Keep trying more, if you're a basshead then you should come across headphones that you like much more than the AD900X and AD1000X.

You mentioned Sennheiser, are you referring to the HD 650?  The HD 600 may be worth trying too.  As for the HiFiMan HE-400 and HE-500, you'll probably like their sound but they're heavy.  Just keep testing out every headphone you can, maybe check out some of the Beyerdynamic headphones like the DT 880.

formerly basshead. now more into neutral or balanced  with good sound staging.

I tested HD 650. good impression. i just cant stand oval shaped. just personal ref.

When i was  at that shop, i think alots of insight. should it go well with my Aune T1, comfort for long listening. isloation etc.

I think AD900x give neutral bass. not boomy or punchy like WS77. AD1000x give more detail bass but alittle slow if listened carefully. More obvious if you tried AKG K702.

Audio Technica is without a doubt easy to drive headphone if i not wrong. I like to try famous HE, DT and hidden gem sony mdr ma900 whenever i got a chance ofcourse.

i now with Aune T1 with GE tube. warm sound stage with alittle more detail. not bright like Electro harmonix. really nice for acoustic and instrumental track.

My personal suggestion is Beyer DT990s, they're amazingly light and comfortable, and they sound pretty damn amazing, good bass, clear highs with a very wide open soundstage.

I used to think of myself as a basshead too (Still do to some degree), but went through the same realization you did when I got my DT990s 250ohm, with my preference now being somewhat neutral but with emphasized bass and treble, which fits the bill exactly on the DT990s.

They can be had pretty often for under $300 (250 Ohm is currently $272 on amazon) and I would highly suggest using them with the GE 6AQ8 as that gave me the best results for my personal preference.

And I want to emphasize again how comfortable these things are, it's somewhat amazing as I have large ears and am rather particular about my ear not being pressed down by my headphones; an issue I've had with pretty much every single other headphone,

A few cautionary notes:
The treble can be kind of sharp at times, though this has more to do with particular songs than the sound in general.
The bass, while fairly deep and satisfying in my opinion, isn't going to give you the same head vibrating feeling as a pair of bass heavy closed cans might, which I think makes the music stand out more as everything blends together nicer rather than being overpowered by bass. Though if you want to get close to that you can use EQ to emphasize the bass even more.
The mids, while they sound great, are very subtle and somewhat recessed, though to me that isn't an issue.
If you have a lot of hair then sometimes the hair can get past the filter and fuse onto the driver requiring you to either send in your phones and get them repaired or to open them up and pull the hairs off yourself, it's not a hard process, just something that might happen. It's easy to notice it as it creates a kind of rattling sound whenever there's something bass heavy playing. (The sound of the hair vibrating against the driver) Personally I love these headphones enough that this doesn't bother me at all as it's fairly easy to fix.

Wowww ! You and me got same taste. i just found out your reply. Thats make me trigger to test Beyer DT line.

Well, my first purchased GE 6AQ8 ECC85 got some hissy song at high gain, high volume. Is it tube fault or not compatible with T1 ? but seriously, GE sound stage is really amaze me.

My current tube is Siemens E88CC(6922, CCa) which is decent sound but not as good sound stage as GE tube. I thinking to get new GE tube. but hesitate because of my 1st GE got that problem. x(

I couldn't find another GE 6AQ8 so I ended up grabbing a Holland made RCA 6AQ8 which so far I believe to be about 90-95% of the GE quality. Might be worth a shot.

Another option I personally like is ECC185, not as wide Soundstage but still good sound.

I have some tube reviews I'll be posting up later today, so keep an eye out for that.

I ask that to my Siemens Seller and he said. ECC85 and E88CC  is different voltage or something like that. But following link poster said it is good with Aune T1.  So i wonder why.
