Hello!!

Hello! New here, been an "unofficial" audiophile for a while, I was somewhat addicted to buying headphones in high school but have been doing a lot more research lately.

I want to buy a new pair of over ear headphones. Around $200, open, for classic rock (lots of progressive stuff), blues, jazz, classical etc...some top 40...

Glad to be here and no longer just lurking.

The DT 880 and Q 701 immediately come mind in that price range.  Both need an amp.

The Sony MDR-MA 900 at or about the top of your budget is also excellent and does well unamped.

Thanks! My computer has pretty good audio and has a 600ohm amp. I am interested in some tube amps also.

Recommended to me before were the HD598's, how  do those compare to the 880s or the 701?

The DT 880's are my favorite all-arounder in their price range.  They are a bit bright, so they're not for everyone.  See:

With their very large sound stage, the Q 701 is probably my favorite can for TV and movies.  With music they allow you to hear every musical voice, but because of this lack the slam of cans with other sound signatures.  They have less bass than neutral but extend well.

The 598 is velvet smooth and slightly veiled.  It is also a great all-arrounder.  Those who like the Senn sound or find the DT 880 to be too bright will like it the best.
