Best neutral headphones for $125?

Looking for a new pair to get me out of my skull candys. I listen to rock and alternative like radiohead, smashing pumpkins, nirvana, doors, led zeppelin, red hot chili peppers, sublime, phish, black keys. Also would like noise canceling and will be traveling a bit so they will be in an out of my backpack.

UE6000 have noise canceling and are fairly neutral in passive mode, but I'd recommend a treble boost. If you switch it on active noise cancelation then I'd recommend a bass reducer. Both these settings are on iphones so it should be easy enough.

I'd also recommend the Sony ZX701ip which is a great discontinued portable that is nicely balanced and sounds fairly neutral, it's mid forward but keeps the bass and treble in check and sounds close to my hi fi home stereo fwiw.

If you're looking for something in that price range tending towards "neutral",

I recommend the KRK KNS 8400 (for starters, anyway).

But the type of music you reference makes me think something with a bit

more bass would be a better fit:  the Audio Technica ATH M50 would probably

do better.

Fischer clones such as HM5 and XPT100.

The xpt100 is a great "neutral" headphone, but it doesn't travel well as it is massive and for those genres I wouldn't recommend those headphones anyhow. Maybe he was asking for balanced headphones?

It isolates very well, but you're right about the size.

Used SRH840 then. It's the fun version of neutral, and it's definitely portable.

Agreed. If you can't or don't want to get used, its little brother the SRH440 is a good choice as well especially unamped.

I'm not sure I agree with you on the recommendation, but I really

like your phrase 'it's the fun version of neutral'.  And personally,

I think the 840's are a bit large (& heavy) to be portable...but they're

a solid choice for headphones generally in the price range.
