Do the ATH-M50 earpads get damaged by sweat/stickiness?

Because the headphones cause heat, I'm concerned about sweat or stickiness when it comes to the pads. Do they cause damage?

The pads are what create the heat and sweat. Over time, nearly all pads breakdown at least a little - that's why manufactures sell replacement pads. Pleather pads can crack just sitting in a box for a few years or being left in your car for for a few months. The foam inside the pads can also break down and disintegrate. However, this happens to ALL headphones, I don't think the M50 is any better or worse than others - and I really don't know what you are worried about. Take reasonable care of the headphones, and they will last far longer than your interest in wearing them - especially if you hang out at this forum...

Do yourself a favor and don't worry about that.  The pads used on the M50 are poor quality, and while you will most likely enhance their life by wiping sweat off, you won't be able to stop their eventual cracking.  Replacement pads are 20 bucks or so, and each set of pads should last you 1-2 years.

Thanks. Also, what kind of pads typically last the longest? I'm interested in the Grado SR80's but I hear bad things about the pads.

Good grief - you seem to be a little obsessed with pad life. Pick the headphones based on what they sound like, not on how long the pads last! Both TMRaven & I are saying the same thing - don't worry about it and just listen to them.

The Grados are very well known to sound different depending on what type of pads are used (bowl, flats, etc). Here's a quick FAQ:
