[Recommendations Please :)] - Need an Sound Card or AMP/DAC to compliment Beyerdermic DT880 Pro(250 Ohm)

Hello,

So I am getting my first pair of entry level audiophile cans for gaming or at least the best cans I have ever owned :)

I am going to be getting the Beyerdermic DT880 Pro (250 Ohms). I know they arent the first choice for gaming cans but my friend is selling them to me for $50 as he is upgrading and there to hard to pass up at that price as I have heard nice things about them.

I would like to spend as little as possible while still getting something that can drive these things decently. Budget is $100-$200.

I would prefer just to purchase a sound card as I do not have one yet, just the on board one for my PC.

Is an amp really necessary to drive these cans and get the potential out of them, or could I invest in a mid to high end sound card that would drive these just fine?

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated, love the forums, mostly just a lurker but I know there's a lot of very knowledge people here and I do appreciate any help as I am new to this.

Thanks :)

Definitely don't pass up that price of $50 for the DT880s if they work well. Nice headphones smily_headphones1.gif

I second the Soundblaster recommendation.

I third the sound blaster recommendation. I have a sound blaster card, although a different model, but I would recommend sound blaster cards especially if you're going to be doing some gaming. I'd recommend trying the headphones directly out of the sound card to for a while. After you're more accustomed to the headphones you can decide if purchasing an external amp would be a worthwhile acquisition. You might find the sound card alone is perfectly capable of driving the headphones adequately for your tastes.
