how should i set the volume on a amp should my sansa clip or cd player be set at high or low volume or should the amp be set at a high or low volume

Set the volume on the source to roughly 50% then control the system volume using the amplifier. Note there's no fixed figures for this since distortion levels and the interaction between the earphone output and the amp input may vary from one combo to another - in cars the usual procedure is to set the receiver's preamp to 75% then gradually increase the amplifier's gain until you get distortion (and then it works differently when you have a different amplifier for the tweeters and the midwoofers). This is why a fixed line out (even if the voltage of an old iPod may vary from an X3 or DX50 for example) is preferred. As it is, the newer players that have a lineout also have a powerful enough amplifier, and dedicated amps just have larger capacitors, which is not really a problem with IEMs and efficient portable headphones.

Try it out for yourself and see what you like best
Most people leave their players at high volumes then use the amp to control the volume.
