Interested in Open-Back Headphones (Listening to Bass Heavy Music - Hiphop, Electronic) from $500-$800 with a $200 AMP

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for open back headphones around 500-800 dollars. I'm into Bass heavy music like Hip Hop and Electronic, but sometimes I'll listen to Alternative, so vocals are important too. A pair of open headphones a little more focused on Bass is preferable. I wear somewhat thick glasses, so I was wondering if you guys could recommend a pair of headphones that won't cause discomfort or crush my glasses. I've been looking at the Beyerdynamic T90 and Hifiman HE 500.

I also need to purchase an amp for the headphones, so I'd like to get as close to $1000 (headphone + amp) as possible with the Headphone and DAC/Amp combo. Can someone assist?

Thank you,

Peter

Are you thinking of a sit-down setup or a portable one? Or a mixture?

The HE-500 is a good choice but these might be a bit top-heavy for electronica - then again I'm a bit sensitive to the high frequencies. The 400s are a little more relaxed which suits me. It might be worth hunting for reduced-price HE-500s as the HE-560 is out.

I find the Fiio E12 is a good match for me, but you might want a more earthy sound - the Fostex HPV1 portable tube amp is pretty amazing, it picks up harmonics and brings everything out. These are amps only though.

What are you plugging a DAC into once you have one?

Thanks for the reply. I'm using the headphones 99% of the time on my Macbook Air.  I hear OPPO is releasing the PM-2s during the summer. Are they worth checking out? Also, are there any other headphones I should look into?

For the DAC, would I need to buy extra cords / wires?

Also, any word on the ear pads? Where do I cop the velour?

I've not tried the OPPO planars but I hear they're very good - seems the PM2 is cheaper than the PM1 but I've only heard about the PM1.

The Shure SRH1840 is worth a look at around $500. Also the Sennheiser HD650 might be up your street as they're warm-sounding.

Most DACs these days comes with cables for the various inputs, but not always - I remember the Graham Slee Bitzie required a USB cable which didn't come in the box as standard. Just check carefully when you buy.
