Bass Lover (Hip-Hop, Electronic) Interested in Open-Back Headphones around $500-$800 and an AMP/DAC

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in purchasing a pair of open back headphones in the 500-800 dollar range. I wear heavy framed glasses (http://www.amazon.com/Ray-Ban-Original-Wayfarer-Sunglasses-Black/dp/B001GNBJNW/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1404154834&sr=8-8&keywords=ray+ban) - something like this. I hear some of the heavier headphones can cause discomfort for people who wear glasses?

I listen to heavy bass (Hip Hop, Electronic) and alternative as well, so vocals are relatively important. Do you have suggestions for a good set of open back headphones that won't be that uncomfortable for a glasses wearer like me? I have the Hifiman HE-500 and Beyerdynamic T90 on my mind so far.

Also, I bet I'll need an AMP/DAC, so do you have suggestions for an AMP under $200? I'm flexible, I just don't want to spend more than $1000 for the AMP/DAC and headphone combo.

Thanks a lot,

Peter

For bass heavy music in that price range, the extended bass of a planar headphone is a great option. I don't know enough about the T90's other than that people think they're a great value. I would even recommend that you check out the Fostex TH-600's, closed, yes, but very clean and open sounding. They were perhaps even more open than the non-Fazor LCD-2's... which have the most natural sound and soundstage I've ever heard. They also have superb bass for those genres, while still maintaining incredible tonality and cleanliness. Plus, to add one more to the list, they're easy to drive. Those + a DAC/AMP would be under $1000 for sure.

Unless you were already planning on upgrading the DAC/amp later, you might want to spend a little more to make sure you're getting the most out of cans in that range... even stretching to $300 would open up a lot more choices. Otherwise, the infamous pairings near that price are the Magni/Modi and O2/ODAC.

The only concern I'd have is about wearing glasses with any of these, you'd have to ask on the specific threads probably to get an answer.

Feel free to ask more questions or shoot a PM.

For bass heavy open headphones, only 2 come to mind for me. The Beyerdynamic DT990 and Sennheiser HD650. I love the HD650 myself, and it performs extremely well with the genres you mentioned. I've heard good things about the Beyerdynamic T1, but haven't listened to it personally. It can regularly be found around $600 bucks USD.
